Associations between Intensive care unit acquired weakness with post-extubation dysphagia and other clinical outcomes- a cohort study in critically ill respiratory patients.

Clin Nutr ESPEN

January 2025

Coordinación de Nutrición Clínica, Departamento de Áreas Críticas, Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias "Ismael Cosío Villegas", Mexico City, Mexico. Electronic address:

Background: Intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-AW) is a complication characterized by decreased muscle mass and impairments in strength and physical function and is associated with poor quality of life and worse clinical outcomes. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the prevalence of ICU-AW, and secondary objectives were to assess risk factors and analyze the associations with clinical outcomes.

Methods: This is a prospective cohort study of patients on mechanical ventilation (MV).

Complex biological systems undergo sudden transitions in their state, which are often preceded by a critical slowing down of dynamics. This results in longer recovery times as systems approach transitions, quantified as an increase in measures such as the autocorrelation and variance. In this study, we analysed paediatric patients in intensive care for whom mechanical ventilation was discontinued through removal of the endotracheal tube (extubation).

Purpose: Research has shown that prolonged endotracheal intubation can increase risk of aspiration following extubation. This study examined the relationship between swallowing and intubation among patients with COVID-19. We investigated the association between the duration of intubation and time until an oral diet was safely initiated and the correlation between the length of intubation and reduced sensation with aspiration as seen on flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)/videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS).

This study aimed to investigate the surgical efficacy of middle ear cholesterol granuloma using otoendoscopy. A total of 23 patients (9 males and 14 females) aged (38±18) years who were diagnosed with middle ear cholesterol granuloma at the Otology Medical Center, the First People's Hospital of Foshan from May 2020 to August 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Based on clinical characteristics of the lesions, the patients were categorized into retention type and granulation type; the latter was further subdivided into localized and extensive types.

Article Synopsis
  • Emergence agitation (EA) is a common issue following thoracic surgeries that can cause serious problems, prompting a study to assess how effective serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) with oxycodone is in preventing it after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).
  • In this study involving 121 adult patients, three groups were formed: one received SAPB alone, another received SAPB with sufentanil, and the third received SAPB with oxycodone; the group with oxycodone showed significantly lower rates of EA at 7.5% compared to 28.6% for sufentanil.
  • Additionally, patients in the oxycodone group had quicker tracheal extubation and less
