We propose and theoretically demonstrate a bottle resonator sensor with a nanoscale altitude and with alength several of hundreds of microns made on the top of the fiber with a radius of tens microns for refractive index and temperature sensor applications. The whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in the resonators can be excited with a taper fiber placed on the top of the resonator. These sensors can be considered as an alternative to fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. The sensitivity of TM-polarized modes is higher than the sensitivity of the TE-polarized modes, but these values are comparable and both polarizations are suitable for sensor applications. The sensitivity ~150 (nm/RIU) can be reached with abottle resonator on the fiber with the radius 10 μm. It can be improved with theuse of a fiber with a smaller radius. The temperature sensitivity is found to be ~10 pm/K. The temperature sensitivity can decrease ~10% for a fiber with a radius r(co) = 10 μm instead of a fiber with a radius r(co) = 100 μm. These sensors have sensitivities comparable to FBG sensors. A bottle resonator sensor with a nanoscale altitude made on the top of the fiber can be easily integrated in any fiber scheme.

Phase transitions in chromatin: Mesoscopic and mean-field approaches.

J Chem Phys

By means of a minimal physical model, we investigate the interplay of two phase transitions at play in chromatin organization: (1) liquid-liquid phase separation within the fluid solvating chromatin, resulting in the formation of biocondensates; and (2) the coil-globule crossover of the chromatin fiber, which drives the condensation or extension of the chain. In our model, a species representing a domain of chromatin is embedded in a binary fluid. This fluid phase separates to form a droplet rich in a macromolecule (B).

Recently, the liquid composite molding technique (LCM) has been used for producing fiber-reinforced polymer composites, since it allows the molding of complex parts, presenting good surface finishing and control of the mechanical properties of the product at the end of the process. Studies in this area have been focused on resin transfer molding (RTM), specifically on the resin rectilinear infiltration through the porous preform inserted in the closed cavity neglecting the sorption effect of the polymeric fluid by the reinforcement. Thus, the objective of this work is to predict resin radial flow in porous media (fibrous preform), including the effect of resin sorption by fibers considering a one-dimensional approach.

The antibacterial nanofibrous mat is crucial in biomedicine as it enhances infection control, expedites wound healing, and mitigates health hazards by decreasing antibiotic usage. A novel synergistic antibacterial and hydrophilic nanofibrous mat successfully fabricated by solution electrospinning from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) incorporated Croton bonplandianum Baill (CBB) leaves extract. Antioxidant-enriched leaf extract of the CBB plant was integrated with PVA in varying proportions of 30% (CBB-30), 40% (CBB-40), and 50% (CBB-50) to manufacture antibacterial nanofibrous mat.

Compartmental analysis of retinal vascular parameters and thickness in myopic eyes using SS-OCTA.

Front Med (Lausanne)

December 2024

Chongqing Key Laboratory of Prevention and Treatment on Major Blinding Diseases, Chongqing Eye Institute, Chongqing Branch (Municipality Division) of National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases, The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how myopia affects the thickness and structure of retinal blood vessels using advanced imaging technology in 100 participants.
  • The findings revealed that individuals with high myopia had significantly lower vessel density and thinner retinal layers, particularly noticeable in the superficial and nerve fiber layers.
  • There was a noted correlation between certain ocular parameters, such as axial length to curvature radius ratio, and retinal thickness in non-high myopic eyes, while high myopic eyes showed less correlation in these aspects.

The scarcity of water resources and their pollution are vital to modern civilization. Thus, adsorptive membranes are promising candidates to be applied in the filtration systems to improve the water quality. In summary, this study investigated the effect of chitosan (CS) in the morphological, chemical, and physical aspects of PLA-based membranes incorporating chitosan obtained by electrospinning process, their adsorption behavior in multielement aqueous systems containing Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn , Ni, and Cd in pH 4, and the possible removal mechanism on the composite electrospun membrane's surface.
