Studies have shown that progesterone enhances functional recovery after ischemic stroke, but the underlying mechanisms are not completely understood. Therefore, we investigated the effect of progesterone on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and neurogenesis in a rodent stroke model. Rats underwent permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) and then received intraperitoneal injections of progesterone (15Â mg/kg) or vehicle at 1Â h followed by subcutaneous injections at 6, 24, and 48Â h. We examined VEGF and BDNF expression by Western blotting and/or immunostaining and microvessel density by lectin immunostaining. Neurogenesis in the subventricular zone was determined by immunostaining of Ki67 and doublecortin, and double BrdU/Nestin immunostaining. We calculated brain water content with the wet-dry weight method on day 3 and assessed neurologic deficits with the modified neurological severity score on days 1, 3, 7, and 14. Progesterone-treated rats showed a significant decrease in VEGF expression, but an increase in BDNF expression, compared with that of vehicle-treated pMCAO rats on day 3 post-occlusion. Progesterone did not alter the microvessel density, but it reduced brain water content compared with that in vehicle-treated rats on day 3 post-occlusion. Progesterone treatment increased the numbers of newly generated neurons in the subventricular zone and doublecortin-positive cells in the peri-infarct region on day 7 post-occlusion. In addition, progesterone improved neurologic function on days 7 and 14 post-occlusion. Our data suggest that the enhancement of endogenous BDNF and subsequent neurogenesis could partially underlie the neuroprotective effects of progesterone.

To understand the action mechanism of probiotics against postmenopausal symptoms, we examined the effects of Lactococcus lactis P32 (P) and Bifidobacterium bifidum P45 (P), which suppressed interleukin (IL)-6 and receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (RANK) ligand (RNAKL) expression in Gardnerella vaginalis (Gv)-stimulated macrophages, on vaginitis, osteoporosis, and depression/cognitive impairment (DC) in mice with vaginally infected Gv, ovariectomy (Ov), or Ov/Gv (oG). Oral administration of P or P decreased Gv-induced DC-like behavior and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-6, RANK, and/or RANKL expression in the vagina, bone, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and colon, while Gv-suppressed bone osteoprotegerin and brain serotonin and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels increased. They partially shifted vaginal and gut dysbiosis in Gv-infected mice to the gut microbiota composition in normal control mice.

Methamphetamine use disorder has emerged as a significant public health concern globally. This study endeavors to elucidate the alterations in expression changes of miRNAs in the plasma of methamphetamine use disorder and elucidate the alterations in miRNA expression in the plasma of individuals with methamphetamine use disorder and investigate the relationship between these differentially expressed miRNAs and the disorder itself, cravings for methamphetamine, and associated mental disorders. Furthermore, the study seeks to clarify the expression of downstream target molecules of specific miRNAs in the plasma of methamphetamine use disorder, assess the diagnostic utility of these miRNAs and their target molecules, explore their potential as biomarkers, and identify potential targets for the diagnosis and treatment of methamphetamine use disorder.

Objectives: This study investigated the impact of hypoxic preconditioning on the survival and oxidative stress tolerance of nestin-expressing hair follicle stem cells (hHFSCs) and SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells, two crucial cell types for central nervous system therapies. The study also examined the relative expression of three key genes, HIF1α, BDNF, and VEGF following hypoxic preconditioning.
Materials And Methods: hHFSCs were isolated from human hair follicles, characterized, and subjected to hypoxia for up to 72 hours.

Introduction: High mortality and morbidity of neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) necessitates the investigation of novel therapies to improve outcomes. It was aimed to elucidate the potential therapeutic effect of estrogen receptor agonists on NEC-induced intestinal and brain injury in rats.
Methods: Sprague-Dawley pups of both sexes were separated from their mothers at postnatal 5 d.

Objective: To compare biomarkers of neurovascular unit (NVU) - S100β, NSE, BDNF and indicators of the brain electrical activity in patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) depending on the use of different versions of multi-tasking cognitive training (CT).
Material And Methods: The study included 89 people, of whom 47 completed the CTI (postural and three cognitive tasks (counting backwards, verbal fluency and the open-ended task «Unusual use of an ordinary object») and 42 patients, who underwent CTII (visuomotor reaction and the same cognitive tasks) in the early postoperative CABG period. The patients of both groups underwent complex testing of psychomotor, executive functions, attention, short-term memory and EEG study in the perioperative period of CABG.
