Purpose: Ultrasound-based motion estimation is an expanding subfield of image-guided radiation therapy. Although ultrasound can detect tissue motion that is a fraction of a millimeter, its accuracy is variable. For controlling linear accelerator tracking and gating, ultrasound motion estimates must remain highly accurate throughout the imaging sequence. This study presents a temporal regularization method for correlation-based template matching which aims to improve the accuracy of motion estimates.
Methods: Liver ultrasound sequences (15-23 Hz imaging rate, 2.5-5.5 min length) from ten healthy volunteers under free breathing were used. Anatomical features (blood vessels) in each sequence were manually annotated for comparison with normalized cross-correlation based template matching. Five sequences from a Siemens Acuson™ scanner were used for algorithm development (training set). Results from incremental tracking (IT) were compared with a temporal regularization method, which included a highly specific similarity metric and state observer, known as the α-β filter/similarity threshold (ABST). A further five sequences from an Elekta Clarity™ system were used for validation, without alteration of the tracking algorithm (validation set).
Results: Overall, the ABST method produced marked improvements in vessel tracking accuracy. For the training set, the mean and 95th percentile (95%) errors (defined as the difference from manual annotations) were 1.6 and 1.4 mm, respectively (compared to 6.2 and 9.1 mm, respectively, for IT). For each sequence, the use of the state observer leads to improvement in the 95% error. For the validation set, the mean and 95% errors for the ABST method were 0.8 and 1.5 mm, respectively.
Conclusions: Ultrasound-based motion estimation has potential to monitor liver translation over long time periods with high accuracy. Nonrigid motion (strain) and the quality of the ultrasound data are likely to have an impact on tracking performance. A future study will investigate spatial uniformity of motion and its effect on the motion estimation errors.

The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) for lifting provides risk zones for assessing two-handed lifting tasks. This paper describes two computational models for identifying the lifting risk zones using gyroscope information from five inertial measurement units (IMUs) attached to the lifter. Two models were developed: (1) the ratio model using body segment length ratios of the forearm, upper arm, trunk, thigh, and calf segments, and (2) the ratio + length model using actual measurements of the body segments in the ratio model.

Biomacromolecules generally exist and function in aqueous media. Is it possible to estimate the state and properties of molecules in an initial three-dimensional colloidal solution based on the structure properties of biomolecules adsorbed on the two-dimensional surface? Using atomic force microscopy to study nanosized objects requires their immobilization on a surface. Particles undergoing Brownian motion in a solution significantly reduce their velocity near the surface and become completely immobilized upon drying.

The integration of different sensory streams is required to dynamically estimate how our head and body are oriented and moving relative to gravity. This process is essential to continuously maintain stable postural control, autonomic regulation, and self-motion perception. The nodulus/uvula (NU) in the posterior cerebellar vermis is known to integrate canal and otolith vestibular input to signal angular and linear head motion in relation to gravity.

In order to improve the understanding foot function in the presence of planovalgus foot deformity, functional joint center determination is applied to the ankle and midfoot for application in 3D-gait analysis. Gait data of 36 patients with planovalgus (PV) foot deformity as well as of 33 typically developing (TD) subjects were collected using foot markers according to the Heidelberg Foot Measurement method. During single-limb stance subjects performed a circular movement of the foot and ankle (CIR) by drawing a circle with the hallux in the air.

The ARCR_Pred study was initiated to document and predict the safety and effectiveness of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) in a representative Swiss patient cohort. In the present manuscript, we aimed to describe the overall and baseline characteristics of the study, report on functional outcome data and explore case-mix adjustment and differences between public and private hospitals. Between June 2020 and November 2021, primary ARCR patients were prospectively enrolled in a multicenter cohort across 18 Swiss and one German orthopedic center.
