Combination of bioassays and chemical analysis was applied to determine the genotoxic/mutagenic contamination in four different sites of the basin of Lake Sevan in Armenia. Water genotoxicity was evaluated using the single cell gel electrophoresis technique (comet assay) in erythrocytes of gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio), Tradescantia micronucleus (Trad-MCN) and Tradescantia stamen hair mutation (Trad-SHM) assays. Significant inter-site differences in the levels of water genotoxicity according to fish and Trad-MCN bioassays have been revealed. Two groups of locations with lower (south-southwest of the village Shorzha and Peninsula of Lake Sevan) and higher (estuaries of Gavaraget and Dzknaget rivers) levels of water genotoxicity were distinguished. Correlation analysis support the hypothesis that the observed genetic alterations in fish and plant may be a manifestation of the effects of water contamination by nitrate ions, Si, Al, Fe, Mn and Cu. Increase of DNA damage in fish also correlated with content of total phosphorus.

By leveraging the Okada model, the study makes the first-ever attempt to examine earthquake-induced tsunamis in Lake Sevan, related to the activation of underwater segments of the active Pambak-Sevan-Syunik Fault (PSSF), the largest geological structure in the Republic of Armenia (RA). Situated in the Arabian-Eurasian continental collision zone, the basin of Sevan, the largest freshwater lake in the Caucasus region, is characterized by a variety of geological hazards capable of producing events of inter-related triggering. Among other threats, the lake tsunami hazard has remained unexplored.

Globally, monitoring of the surface waters is largely limited to the physico-chemical analysis of water in rivers and lakes. Sediment state in the aquatic systems including sediment chemical content or the structure and diversity of benthic communities or ecotoxicological studies with natural sediments remains largely overlooked by the monitoring programs. The narrow-clawed crayfish is a crayfish species that was accidentally introduced into the ecosystem of Lake Sevan in the 1980s. Soon it became one of the most preferred fisheries in the lake and an important link in the food chain by successfully replacing the endemic fish subspecies Sevan khramicarp (Capoeta sevangi, De Filippi, 1865) in the chain of detritivores. However, recently, the stock declines dramatically, associated with two main threats: the impact of burn-spot disease and an increase in fishing pressure on its population.
