The balance and functionality of the cardiovascular system are maintained by a network of couplings between the different oscillations involved. We study the effect of ageing on these interactions through the application of wavelet analysis, and by the use of dynamical Bayesian inference to compute coupling functions. The method, applied to phases extracted from microvascular flow recorded by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF), reveals the coupling functions between oscillations propagated to the smallest vessels. Consistent with earlier work based on analysis of cardiac and respiratory phases obtained from direct measurements, our analysis demonstrates an impairment of the propagated cardio-respiratory coupling with ageing. The coupling weakens despite the increased cardiac component in the LDF with ageing. Our results bring new insight to the effect of ageing on cardiovascular regulation that might help improve the diagnostic potential of LDF monitors.

Objectives: Despite the widely recognised high mortality rate among patients with hip fracture, the variation in death rates by gender and cause has been less explored. This study aimed to investigate mortality rates and causes of death in patients who underwent hip fracture surgery, and to compare them with those of the general population. A secondary objective was to compare the results of Internal Fixation versus Arthroplasty in these patients.

Rationale: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a clinical syndrome associated with a multitude of conditions. Although renal replacement therapy (RRT) remains the cornerstone of treatment for advanced AKI, its implementation can potentially pose risks and may not be readily accessible across all healthcare settings and regions. Elevated lactate levels are implicated in sepsis-induced AKI; however, it remains unclear whether increased lactate directly induces AKI or elucidates the underlying mechanisms.

Introduction: Delirium, frequently experienced by ischemic stroke patients, is one of the most common neuropsychiatric syndromes reported in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Stroke patients with delirium have a high mortality rate and lengthy hospitalization. For these reasons, early diagnosis of delirium in the ICU is critical for better patient prognosis.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), resulting from the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), affects various bodily systems, including the heart, central nervous system, muscles, and bones, all of which harbor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) receptors similar to those in the respiratory system. However, research on the inflammatory response and its impact on systems such as the musculoskeletal one is relatively scarce. Our study aimed to investigate bone and muscle metrics as well as handgrip strength in individuals who recuperated from COVID-19 infection.

Background: Comorbidities or complications significantly influence coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) severity and mortality risk. Therefore, this study aimed to compare treatment outcomes of COVID-19 inpatients by underlying diseases or complications.
Method: Data on COVID-19 patients from the National Health Insurance Service customized research database were analyzed while focusing on eight underlying diseases and complications: diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, dementia, depression, and respiratory disease.
