Health promotion, as defined by the Ottawa Charter (1) is the 'process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health'. Four life style risk factors: smoking, alcohol, obesity and physical activity are recognised as leading to health inequalities. These factors have implications at an individual, community and national level and the burden of disease has large cost implications for the NHS and country as a whole. Therefore the assessment of these risk factors, and the provision of good health promotion assist to address these problems. A pilot and initial audit demonstrated that assessment for the key life style risk factors and the provision of health promotion was poor. This quality improvement audit developed an easy to use, checklist based, amended clerking document. This improved both assessment and provision of health promotion and will be carried forward to influence the designing of a new clerking document.

The relationship between serum vitamin C levels and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in children.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Clinical Laboratory, Children's Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou Key Laboratory of Children's Infection and Immunity, Zhengzhou, 450000, P. R. China.

The relationship between vitamin C nutritional status and inflammation has garnered increasing attention, but studies in younger populations are limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum vitamin C and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in children and adolescents. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Untangling areas of improvement in secondary prevention of ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Sci Rep

Health Services Research and Pharmacoepidemiology Unit, Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of Valencia Region (FISABIO), Avenida Cataluña, 21, 46020, Valencia, Spain.

Improvement of post-stroke outcomes relies on patient adherence and appropriate therapy maintenance by physicians. However, comprehensive evaluation of these factors is often overlooked. This study assesses secondary stroke prevention by differentiating patient adherence to antithrombotic treatments (ATT) from physician-initiated interruptions or switches.

This study aimed to calculate Italy's first national maternal mortality ratio (MMR) through an innovative record-linkage approach within the enhanced Italian Obstetric Surveillance System (ItOSS). A record-linkage retrospective cohort study was conducted nationwide, encompassing all women aged 11-59 years with one or more hospitalizations related to pregnancy or pregnancy outcomes from 2011 to 2019. Maternal deaths were identified by integrating data from the Death Registry and national and regional Hospital Discharge Databases supported by the integration of findings from confidential enquiries conducted through active surveillance.

Objective: This study aimed to examine the levels of physical activity (PA), sleep, and mental health (MH), specifically depression, anxiety, and stress, among Chinese university students. It also aimed to analyze the influencing factors of MH, providing a theoretical foundation for developing intervention programs to improve college students' mental health.

Methods: A stratified, clustered, and phased sampling method was employed.

Refining minimal engineered receptors for specific activation of on-target signaling molecules.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Laboratory of Cell Vaccine, Microbial Research Center for Health and Medicine (MRCHM), National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition (NIBIOHN), 7-6-8 Saito-Asagi, Ibaraki-Shi, Osaka, 567-0085, Japan.

Since designer cells are attracting much attention as a new modality in gene and cell therapy, it would be advantageous to develop synthetic receptors that recognize artificial ligands and activate solely signaling molecules of interest. In this study, we refined the construction of our previously developed minimal engineered receptors (MERs) to avoid off-target activation of STAT5 while maintaining on-target activation of signaling molecules corresponding to tyrosine motifs. Among the myristoylated, cytoplasmic, and transmembrane types of MERs, the cytoplasmic type had the highest signaling efficiency, although there was off-target activation of STAT5 upon ligand stimulation.
