An oncology nurse talks about her 42-year career at Stanford Medical Center. The technological and pharmacological advances she has seen in that time have changed the face of oncology nursing practice and transformed many previously fatal cancers into curable diseases or chronic illnesses compatible with well-being. The increasing complexity of care requires multidisciplinary collaboration and brings with it new ethical dilemmas. She cautions nurses to make the best use of technology without losing their critical thinking skills, basic assessment skills, and common sense.

Surface-mediated transmission of pathogens plays a key role in healthcare-associated infections. However, proper techniques for its quantitative analysis are lacking, making it challenging to develop novel antimicrobial and anti-fouling surfaces to reduce pathogen spread via environmental surfaces. This study demonstrates a gelatin hydrogel-based touch transfer test, the HydroTouch test, to evaluate pathogen transmission on high-touch surfaces under semi-dry conditions.

While piezoelectric sensing and energy-harvesting devices still largely rely on inorganic components, biocompatible and biodegradable piezoelectric materials, such as cellulose nanocrystals, might constitute optimal and sustainable building blocks for a variety of applications in electronics and transient implants. To this aim, however, effective methods are needed to position cellulose nanocrystals in large and high-performance architectures. Here, we report on scalable assemblies of cellulose nanocrystals in multilayered piezoelectric systems with exceptional response, for various application scopes.

Background: Although the association of peripheral skin temperature with infection, serious illness and death have been recognised for centuries, few studies have explicitly compared this finding with other bedside indicators of illness severity. This study compared subjectively assessed dorsal forearm skin temperature and moisture with other indicators of illness severity.

Methods: Non-interventional observational study of acutely ill medical patients admitted to a low-resource Ugandan hospital, which examined the association of subjectively assessed dorsal forearm skin temperature and other bedside findings with death within 24 h.

With the increase of patients with adult congenital heart disease, the number of high-risk multiple redo sternotomies is increasing. Calcified conduit embedded in the sternum or large vessels attached to the sternum presents an especially challenging case. This video tutorial presents a simple safe redo sternotomy technique using an ultrasonic bone scalpel in such high-risk patients.

Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) may exhibit poorer performance in visuomotor tasks than healthy individuals, particularly under conditions with high cognitive load. Few studies have examined reaching movements in MCI and did so without assessing susceptibility to distractor interference. This proof-of-concept study analyzed the kinematics of visually guided reaching movements towards a target dot placed along the participants' midsagittal/reaching axis.
