Eryptotic erythrocytes are prone to adhere to the vascular endothelium, provoking atherosclerosis. As statins do not prevent eryptosis compounds with anti-eryptotic effects could help treated hypercholesterolemic subjects in decreasing cardiovascular disease risk. Plant sterols (PSs) have shown this anti-eryptotic effect ex vivo, along with their cholesterol-lowering activity.

Increased Adhesiveness of Blood Cells Induced by Mercury Chloride: Protective Effect of Hydroxytyrosol.

Antioxidants (Basel)

December 2024

Departamento de Farmacología, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Valencia, 46010 Valencia, Spain.

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic environmental contaminant that can harm human health, ultimately leading to endothelial dysfunction. Hg toxicity is partially mediated by the exposure of the cell membrane's surface of erythrocytes (RBCs) to phosphatidylserine (PS). In the context of these challenges, hydroxytyrosol, a phenolic compound of olive oil, has the ability to mitigate the toxic effects of Hg.

In Plasmodium falciparum malaria, infected cells accumulate in blood vessels of organs, including the brain. Recently, Reyes et al. identified monoclonal antibodies that stop infected cells from binding to the endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) in a model of brain blood vessels.

Circulating biomarkers associated with pediatric sickle cell disease.

Front Mol Biosci

December 2024

Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Immunology, Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA, United States.

Introduction: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder caused by a mutation in the HBB gene, which encodes the beta-globin subunit of hemoglobin. This mutation leads to the production of abnormal hemoglobin S (HbS), causing red blood cells to deform into a sickle shape. These deformed cells can block blood flow, leading to complications like chronic hemolysis, anemia, severe pain episodes, and organ damage.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has great potential and advantages in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Wutou decoction (WTD) was first recorded as a pill in the TCM classical book Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber written by Zhang Zhongjing in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 CE). It has significant therapeutic effects in delaying and reversing RA while improving patients' clinical symptoms, making it the best example of TCM treatment for RA.
