AI Article Synopsis

  • Study examined the link between Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) use and the risk of falls and fractures in older women.
  • Involves 400 female patients aged 70 and older who were admitted to a trauma center after falls.
  • Findings show that PPI use significantly increases the risk of recurrent falls (almost double) and fracture risks, suggesting clinicians should review PPI prescriptions regularly.

Article Abstract

Objectives: To examine the association between Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) use and falls and fractures.

Design: A cross-sectional study.

Setting And Participants: 400 female patients aged 70 years or older who were consecutively admitted to the Trauma Center Meidling, Vienna, after a fall and who required hospital admission.

Methods: We quantified the strength of the associations between PPI use and falls, and between PPI use and fractures, using a logistic regression.

Results: use of PPIs was significantly associated with risk of recurrent falls (OR 1.92, 95% CI = 1.05 - 3.50, p = 0.04) as well as with risk of a fracture (OR 2.15, 95% CI 1.10 - 4.21, p = 0.03).

Conclusions: In conclusion, our results provide further evidence that PPI use may increase risk of falls and fractures in older women and highlight the need for clinicians to reassess the original indication and the need for continuation of PPIs on a regular basis.

A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays Λ_{b}^{0}→Λ_{c}^{+}h^{-}(h=π,K), followed by Λ_{c}^{+}→Λh^{+} with Λ→pπ^{-} or Λ_{c}^{+}→pK_{S}^{0} decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity (CP) asymmetries are measured, with no significant CP violation observed. For the first time, the Λ_{b}^{0}→Λ_{c}^{+}h^{-} decay parameters are measured.

MR imaging of proton beam-induced oxygen depletion.

Background: Previous studies have shown that in-beam magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to visualize a proton beam during the irradiation of liquid-filled phantoms. The beam energy- and current-dependent local image contrast observed in water was identified to be predominantly caused by beam-induced buoyant convection and associated flow effects. Besides this flow dependency, the MR signal change was found to be characterized by a change in the relaxation time of water, hinting at a radiochemical contribution, which was hypothesized to lie in oxygen depletion-evoked relaxation time lengthening.

Water-soluble π-conjugated luminescent bioprobes have been broadly used in biomedical research but are limited by the nonbiodegradability associated with their rigid C-C backbones. In the present work, we introduced three naphthalene monoimide (NMI)-functionalized amphiphilic fluorescent polyesters (P1, P2, and P3) prepared by transesterification of functional diols with an activated diester monomer of adipic acid. These polyesters featured a side-chain NMI fluorophore, imparting the required hydrophobicity for self-assembly in water and endowing the polymeric nanoassemblies with green fluorescence.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have shown great potential for direct X-ray detection in security screening and medical diagnostics. However, their humidity stability is compromised due to the susceptibility of the structural components to water molecules, thereby limiting their practical application. In this work, stable and sensitive X-ray detection is achieved using high-quality bulk single crystals of the 3D perovskitoid (DMPZ)PbBr (DPB, DMPZ = N,N'-dimethyl-pyrazinium), wherein N-acid protons are replaced with hydrophobic alkyl groups.

Physical exercise is known to slow synaptic neurodegeneration and cognitive aging in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The benefits of physical exercise are related to reduced amyloid beta (Aβ) deposition and increased synaptic plasticity. Yet little is known about the mechanisms that mediate these effects.
