Because the size, size distribution, and concentration of emulsions play an important role in most of the applications, controlled emulsion generation and effective concentration are of great interest in fundamental and applied studies. While microfluidics has been demonstrated to be able to produce emulsion drops with controlled size, size distribution, and hierarchical structures, progress of controlled generation of concentrated emulsions is limited. Here, we present an effective microfluidic emulsion generation system integrated with an orifice structure to separate aqueous droplets from the continuous oil phase, resulting in concentrated emulsion drops in situ. Both experimental and simulation results show that the efficiency of separation is determined by a balance between pressure drop and droplet accumulation near the orifice. By manipulating this balance via changing flow rates and microfluidic geometry, we can achieve monodisperse droplets on chip that have a concentration as high as 80,000 drops per microliter (volume fraction of 66%). The present approach thus provides insights to the design of microfluidic device that can be used to concentrate emulsions (drops and bubbles), colloidal particles (drug delivery polymer particles), and biological particles (cells and bacteria) when volume fractions as high as 66% are necessary.

Complete shielding of multivitamins to reduce toxic peroxides in the parenteral nutrition (C-SMART-PN): A randomized controlled pilot study.

Nutr Clin Pract

January 2025

Department of Nutrition, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sainte-Justine Research Center, Université de Montréal, Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Background: When exposed to ambient light, parenteral nutrition (PN) contamination with peroxides almost doubles, which increases oxidative stress in preterm infants, contributing to the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) recommends complete PN photoprotection to reduce peroxide contamination and optimize its integrity but acknowledges the challenges of its implementation. In this study, a novel photoprotection procedure was tested for its effectiveness in reducing peroxide load and limiting ascorbic acid degradation, and for its feasibility and effectiveness in reducing urinary peroxide levels in preterm infants.

Block copolymer (BCP) microparticles, which exhibit rapid change of morphology and physicochemical property in response to external stimuli, represent a promising avenue for the development of programmable smart materials. Among the methods available for generating BCP microparticles with adjustable morphologies, the confined assembly of BCPs within emulsions has emerged as a particularly facile and versatile approach. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the role of responsive surfactants in modulating interfacial interactions at the oil-water interface, which facilitates controlled BCP microparticle morphology.

In recent years, liquid-solid triboelectric nanogenerators (L-S TENGs) have been rapidly developed in the field of liquid energy harvesting and self-powered sensing. This is due to a number of advantages inherent in the technology, including the low cost of fabricated materials, structural diversity, high charge-energy conversion efficiency, environmental friendliness, and a wide range of applications. As liquid phase dielectric materials typically used in L-S TENG, a variety of organic and inorganic single-phase liquids, including distilled water, acidic solutions, sodium chloride solutions, acetone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and acetonitrile, as well as paraffinic oils, have been used in experiments.

Foamy Melamine Resin-Silica Aerogel Composite-Derived Thermal Insulation Coating.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

State Key Laboratory of High-Performance Civil Engineering Materials, Jiangsu Sobute New Materials Co., Ltd., Nanjing 210008, China.

A novel class of SiO aerogel-based resin composite with a self-formed foamy structure and an extremely low thermal conductivity, as well as excellent fire resistance, was fabricated via a room temperature and atmospheric pressure route. The self-formed foamy structure was achieved by utilizing SiO aerogel particles not only as a thermal insulative functional additive filler but also as nano-sized solid particles in a Picking emulsion system, adjusting the surface tension as a stabilizer at the interface between the two immiscible phases (liquid and air in this case). The results of foamy structure analyses via scanning electron microscopy, micro-CT, and N adsorption-desorption isotherms validate the successful generation of a micro-scale porous structure with the enhancement of the aerogel nano-scale solid particles at the wall as a stabilizer.
