Introduction: Immunotherapy has transformed cancer treatment, particularly with immune checkpoint inhibitors and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy. Despite their efficacy, these therapies can induce cardiotoxicity, presenting significant clinical challenges. Immune checkpoint inhibitors can cause myocarditis; pericarditis; arrhythmias; and myocardial infarction through immune-mediated inflammation.

Small-for-size syndrome is a clinical syndrome of early allograft dysfunction usually following living donor liver transplantation due to a mismatch between recipient metabolic and functional requirements and the graft's functional capacity. While graft size relative to the recipient size is the most commonly used parameter to predict risk, small-for-size syndrome is multifactorial and its development depends on a number of inter-dependant factors only some of which are modifiable. Intra-operative monitoring of portal haemodynamics and portal flow modulation is widely recommended though there is wide variation in clinical practice.

Peri-operative complications following endoscopic-assisted transoral resection of parapharyngeal space tumors: retrospective analysis of 100 patients.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

December 2024

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, 1st Dongjiaominxiang, Dongcheng District, Beijing, 100730, China.

Purpose: A transoral surgical corridor can provide adequate exposure for extirpation of benign tumors arising from the parapharyngeal space (PPS). However, peri-operative complications following a transoral approach to the PPS have not been sufficiently described. This study retrospectively reviewed patients with PPS tumor extirpated via an endoscopic-assisted transoral approach, aiming to evaluate the safety of this approach and summarize the peri-operative complications.

Existing tools for predicting postoperative complications in women undergoing surgery for gynecological neoplasms are evaluated in this narrative review. Although surgery is a very efficient therapy for gynecological tumors, it is not devoid of the possibility of negative postoperative outcomes. Widely used tools at present, such as the Surgical Apgar Score and the Modified Frailty Index, fail to consider the complex characteristics of gynecological malignancies and their related risk factors.

Article Synopsis
  • Semaglutide, a drug that slows down stomach emptying, may pose risks for patients undergoing surgery due to potential increased residual gastric content and aspiration during anesthesia, especially if taken within 10 days before the operation.
  • In a study with 220 patients, those who had taken semaglutide showed a significantly higher incidence (40%) of increased gastric content compared to only 3% in the control group.
  • The findings suggest that using semaglutide pre-operatively raises the risk of residual gastric content, although there were no reported cases of aspiration during the surgeries.
