Chromatin domains associated with the nuclear lamina are generally heterochromatic and transcriptionally repressed. How they are recruited to and maintained at the nuclear periphery remains unclear. A recent study by Gonzalez-Sandoval et al. (2015) in Cell identifies a chromatin-binding protein that links repressive chromatin with the inner nuclear membrane.

Article Synopsis
  • Food losses and waste (FLW) significantly impact the environment, society, and the economy, with horticulture experiencing the highest losses at approximately 50% of production and accounting for 38% of global FLW.
  • Research focused on 343 grape farmers in Egypt revealed average postharvest loss percentages of about 10% for growers and around 5-7% for different market players, costing the economy over $203 million annually and contributing to substantial CO2 emissions.
  • To address these issues, strategies such as cooperative marketing, shorter supply chains, and better access to cold storage are essential, alongside agricultural education and investments to improve postharvest practices and reduce FLWs.

Informal ready-to-eat food vending is an important, cheap, convenient, accessible and readily available urban food supply sector that has become an increasingly important part of the diets of people in developing cities in Africa and throughout other contexts in the Global South. Over decades, despite challenges associated with health and hygiene, street foods have been informally accepted as part of the urban food supply system, particularly among the urban poor. Despite the importance of street foods to food security and employment needs in urban Nigeria and elsewhere, very little is known about the governance arrangements (whether formal or informal) revolving around their food provisioning practices.

Little has been published on the factors influencing the safety and quality of milk derived from water buffalo in Bangladesh. This study aims to describe the milk hygiene parameters and milk chain characteristics of unpasteurized raw milk sold to consumers in order to improve milk hygiene. A quantitative study design evaluated somatic cell counts, total bacterial counts, and specific gram-negative (Enterobacteria) and gram-positive (staphylococci) pathogens in 377 aseptically collected milk samples.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly infectious transboundary disease that is endemic and affects the livelihood of smallholder farmers in Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR). Knowledge about livestock movement patterns is important for preventing the spread of FMD between villages. This study describes the livestock movement patterns in Champasak, Savannakhet and Xiangkhouang provinces of Lao PDR.
