A multi-wavelength expansion of the Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm is developed to design and optimize a surface relief Diffractive Optical Element (DOE). The DOE simultaneously diffracts distinct wavelength bands into separate target regions. A description of the algorithm is provided, and parameters that affect filter performance are examined. Performance is based on the spectral power collected within specified regions on a receiver plane. The modified GS algorithm is used to design spectrum splitting optics for CdSe and Si photovoltaic (PV) cells. The DOE has average optical efficiency of 87.5% over the spectral bands of interest (400-710 nm and 710-1100 nm). Simulated PV conversion efficiency is 37.7%, which is 29.3% higher than the efficiency of the better performing PV cell without spectrum splitting optics.

A lensless compact arrangement based on digital in-line holography under Gabor's regime is proposed as a novel contactless method to assess the profile of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs) which are conformed by several diffractive rings. Diffractive MIOLs are a widely adopted ophthalmologic option for the correction of presbyopia in patients undergoing cataract surgery. The MIOL optical design might introduce non-negligible optical performance differences between lenses as well as the introduction of undesirable photic phenomena (such as halos and glare) affecting the vision of users.

Spin-Orbit-Locking Vectorial Metasurface Holography.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University, Shenzhen, Guangdong, 518055, China.

Vectorial metasurface holography, allowing for independent control over the amplitude, phase, and polarization distribution of holographic images enabled by metasurfaces, plays a crucial role in the realm of optical display, optical, and quantum communications. However, previous research on vectorial metasurface holography has typically been restricted to single degree of freedom input and single channel output, thereby demonstrating a very limited modulation capacity. This work presents a novel method to achieve multi-channel vectorial metasurface holography by harnessing spin-orbit-locking vortex beams.

Collimated flat-top beam shapers primarily consisting of freeform lenses have a wide range of applications and pose challenges in terms of processing and integration when the diameter is less than millimeters. Metasurfaces represent a promising solution to planarize optics, can mimic any surface curvature without additional fabrication difficulty, and are suitable for flat-top optics. The conventional metasurface design approach relies on imparting the required phase using meta-atoms and encounters challenges in amplitude modulation due to near-field coupling and varying transmittances among meta-atoms with different phases, making the design of flat-top beam shapers difficult.

With rapid development of holography, metasurface-based holographic communication scheme shows great potential in development of adaptive electromagnetic function. However, conventional passive metasurfaces are severely limited by poor reconfigurability, which makes it difficult to achieve wavefront manipulations in real time. Here, we propose a holographic communication strategy that on-demand target information is firstly acquired and encoded via a depth camera integrated with modified YOLOv5s target detection algorithm, then transmitted by software defined radio modules with long term evolution at 5 GHz, and finally reproduced in the form of holographic images by spin-decoupled programmable coding metasurfaces at 12 GHz after decoding through modified Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm.

We present a beam homogenizer utilizing on a random metalens array (RMA) for enhanced beam shaping. The RMA, comprising 28 × 28 individual metalenses with random sizes, is designed using an improved Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm. As a laser beam traverses the RMA, it is divided into 28 × 28 beams, each exhibiting a unique speckle pattern.
