Within the framework of the ESRF Phase I Upgrade Programme, a new state-of-the-art synchrotron beamline ID16B has been recently developed for hard X-ray nano-analysis. The construction of ID16B was driven by research areas with major scientific and societal impact such as nanotechnology, earth and environmental sciences, and bio-medical research. Based on a canted undulator source, this long beamline provides hard X-ray nanobeams optimized mainly for spectroscopic applications, including the combination of X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, X-ray excited optical luminescence, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and 2D/3D X-ray imaging techniques. Its end-station re-uses part of the apparatus of the earlier ID22 beamline, while improving and enlarging the spectroscopic capabilities: for example, the experimental arrangement offers improved lateral spatial resolution (∼50 nm), a larger and more flexible capability for in situ experiments, and monochromatic nanobeams tunable over a wider energy range which now includes the hard X-ray regime (5-70 keV). This paper describes the characteristics of this new facility, short-term technical developments and the first scientific results.

Background: Because of clinically overlapping parkinsonian motor symptoms, it is hard to diagnose a specific disease in atypical parkinsonism or differentiate Parkinson's disease (PD) from atypical parkinsonism. Herein, we report the clinicopathological mismatching of an autopsy-confirmed PSP in a patient clinically diagnosed with PD.

Method Clinical History: We reviewed the brief clinical history of a 70-year-old man and neurologic examination.

Augmented Reality for Surgical Navigation: A Review of Advanced Needle Guidance Systems for Percutaneous Tumor Ablation.

Radiol Imaging Cancer

January 2025

From the Department of Clinical Affairs, MediView XR, Cleveland, Ohio (M.E.); College of Medicine, Alfaisal University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (A.B.); and Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Section of Interventional Radiology, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, 9500 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH 44195-5243 (S.K., K.G., C.M.).

Percutaneous tumor ablation has become a widely accepted and used treatment option for both soft and hard tissue malignancies. The current standard-of-care techniques for performing these minimally invasive procedures require providers to navigate a needle to their intended target using two-dimensional (2D) US or CT to obtain complete local response. These traditional image-guidance systems require operators to mentally transpose what is visualized on a 2D screen into the inherent three-dimensional (3D) context of human anatomy.

Effect of different evening primrose oil content (1-20 %) on the rheological, mechanical, textural and microstructure of furcellaran/whey protein isolate emulsion gels were investigated at neutral, unmodified pH environment. The results indicate that, irrespective of the concentration, the oil acted as an inactive filler and was not chemically bound in the polymer network but only physically immobilized in it. The increasing oil amount in the material from 1 to 20 % resulted in a percentage decrease in hardness (52 %), gumminess (71 %) and stress relaxation ratio (17 %) which means that presence of the hydrophobic components weakens the structure of the material, but all samples exhibit elastic behaviour.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydatid disease, caused by the Echinococcus parasite, is a serious health issue in endemic areas, and breast involvement is notably rare; this case involves a 34-year-old Ethiopian woman initially misdiagnosed with breast cancer.
  • The patient presented with a painless swelling in her left breast that persisted for nine months, without symptoms typically associated with cancer, such as discharge or skin changes.
  • Diagnostic imaging and tests ultimately confirmed that the mass was a hydatid cyst, highlighting the need for healthcare professionals to consider less common conditions in their diagnosis of breast masses in endemic regions.

Dough fermentation is an effective method for selenium conversion. This study investigated the effects of low NaSeO concentrations on the morphology, texture, fermentation properties, Se species, Se bioaccessibility, and antioxidant capacity of two types of yeast-leaved steamed bread. The results indicated that NaSeO did not significantly affect the specific volume; but it did result in increased hardness.
