This study examines the relationships among Foreign Language Learning Enjoyment (FLLE), L2 grit, academic burnout, and motivated behavior in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, using a mixed-methods approach. A total of 534 Chinese undergraduate EFL learners participated in the quantitative phase, which used a cross-sectional survey, followed by narrative inquiry with 15 participants in the qualitative phase. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis revealed that FLLE positively influenced motivated behavior while reducing academic burnout.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality among individuals with noncommunicable diseases worldwide. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Mitochondria are integral to the cardiovascular system, and it has been reported that mitochondrial transfer is associated with the pathogenesis of multiple CVDs and obesity.

Research priorities for improving cognitive and neuropsychological outcomes in hydrocephalus.

Fluids Barriers CNS

December 2024

Hydrocephalus Association, 4340 East West Highway, Suite 905, Bethesda, MD, 20814-4447, USA.

Hydrocephalus is a neurological disorder that impacts approximately 85 per 100,000 individuals worldwide and is associated with motor and cognitive impairments. While many advances in surgical interventions have helped substantially improve the survival rates and quality of life of those affected, there continues to be significant gaps in our understanding of the etiology of this heterogeneous condition as well as its specific neuropsychological and functional challenges across different phases of life. To address these limitations, the Hydrocephalus Association and Rudi Schulte Research Institute organized a workshop titled, "Improving Cognitive and Psychological Outcomes in Hydrocephalus", composed of top academics in the fields of hydrocephalus, cognition, and neuropsychology, as well as individuals with hydrocephalus or their caregivers.

The Influence of Ovarian-Derived Extracellular Vesicles in Reproduction.

Adv Anat Embryol Cell Biol

January 2025

Laboratory of Molecular Morphophysiology and Development, Department of Veterinary Medicine, School of Animal Science and Food Engineering, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

In this chapter, we explore the multifaceted roles of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in ovarian biology, focusing on their contributions to folliculogenesis, oocyte competence, corpus luteum function, and immune response regulation. EVs, particularly those derived from follicular fluid (ffEVs), are crucial mediators of cell-to-cell communication within the ovarian follicle, influencing processes such as meiotic progression, stress response, and hormonal regulation. We review preexisting literature, highlighting key findings on the molecular cargo of EVs, such as miRNAs and proteins, and their involvement in regulating the function of the follicle cells.

Development of a microbiome for phenolic metabolism based on a domestication approach from lab to industrial application.

Commun Biol

December 2024

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Industrial Biological Systems and Process Engineering, Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tianjin, 300308, China.

Despite a lot of efforts devoted to construct efficient microbiomes, there are still major obstacles to moving from the lab to industrial applications due to the inapplicability of existing technologies or limited understanding of microbiome variation regularity. Here we show a domestication strategy to cultivate an effciient and resilient functional microbiome for addressing phenolic wastewater challenges, which involves directional domestication in shaker, laboratory water test in small-scale, gas test in pilot scale, water test in pilot scale, and engineering application in industrial scale. The domestication process includes the transition from water to gas, which provided complex transient environment for screening of a more adaptable and robust microbiome, thereby mitigating the performance disparities encountered when transitioning from laboratory experimentation to industrial engineering applications.
