Background: There are a limited number of approved treatments for papulopustular rosacea (PPR) and remission is difficult to maintain after successful treatment.

Objectives: To investigate remission over a 36-week extension period in patients with moderate to severe PPR successfully treated with 16 weeks' treatment with ivermectin 1% cream once daily (QD) or metronidazole 0.75% cream twice daily (BID) in a randomized, parallel-group Phase III study.

Methods: Treatment was discontinued in patients initially successfully treated [Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA) score of 0 or 1] with ivermectin 1% cream QD (n = 399) or metronidazole 0.75% cream BID (n = 365; Part A) and patients were followed every 4 weeks for up to 36 weeks (Part B). Treatment with the same study treatment as used in Part A was only re-initiated if patients relapsed (IGA ≥ 2). Efficacy assessments were: time to first relapse; relapse rate; and number of days free of treatment. Safety assessments included incidence of adverse events and local cutaneous signs and symptoms.

Results: The median time to first relapse was significantly longer (115 days vs. 85 days) and relapse rates at the end of the study period significantly lower (62.7% vs. 68.4%) for patients initially successfully treated with ivermectin 1% compared with metronidazole 0.75%; Kaplan-Meier plot demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the two arms (P = 0.0365). The median number of days free of treatment was higher for ivermectin compared with metronidazole (196 days vs. 169.5 days; P = 0.026). The percentage of patients who experienced a related adverse event was equally low in both groups.

Conclusion: The results of this relapse study showed that an initial successful treatment with ivermectin 1% cream QD significantly extended remission of rosacea compared with initial treatment with metronidazole 0.75% cream BID following treatment cessation.

The methods of H NMR, spectrophotometric titration, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis are applied to determine the selective binding ability of Co(III)- and Zn(II)-coproporphyrins I towards a series of imidazole-based drug molecules with a wide spectrum of pharmacological activity (metronidazole, histamine, histidine, tinidazole, mercazolil, and pilocarpine) in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) simulating the blood plasma environment. It is shown that in aqueous buffer media, Co(III)-coproporphyrin I, unlike Zn(II)-coproporphyrin I, binds two imidazole derivatives, and the stability of mono-axial Co-coproporphyrin imidazole complexes is two to three orders of magnitude higher than that of similar complexes of Zn-coproporphyrin I.

Techniques for reutilization of the discarded bischofite are limited while efficient recovery of the Mg(OH) nanoparticles from water during the synthesis and reuse processes is a challenge. In this study, the FeO@Mg(OH) core-shell magnetic nanoparticles were firstly prepared from discarded bischofite and used as catalyst for improving the ozonation of metronidazole (MNZ). The removal rate constant of MNZ increased by 694.

Background: Helicobacter pylori eradication rates in Portugal are declining, due to increased resistance of this bacterium to antimicrobial agents, especially Clarithromycin. Quadruple Levofloxacin-containing regimens could be an option for first-line treatment, but its efficacy should be evaluated as fluoroquinolone resistance is rapidly increasing. Our aim was to compare the efficacy of Clarithromycin and Levofloxacin-based sequential quadruple therapies as first-line treatment options and determine factors associated with treatment failure.

Objective: To assess hospital- and physician-level variation in pattern of perioperative antibiotic use for laryngectomy and the relationship between pattern of antibiotic use and surgical site infection (SSI), wound dehiscence, and antibiotic-induced complications.

Study Design: Retrospective analysis of University HealthSystem Consortium data.

Objective: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is associated with preterm labor and may be positive in 15% of asymptomatic high-risk women. Fetal fibronectin (fFN) has been shown in symptomatic women to predict infection-related preterm birth. The purpose of this study was to quantitate the relationship between BV/fFN and preterm delivery in high-risk asymptomatic women.
