Interactions between color channels (long-wave (L), middle-wave (M) and short-wave (S)) in the receptive field of direction-selective (DS) and orientation-selective (OS) ganglion cells (GCs) were investigated with combined selective stimulation of pairs of cone types (L and M, L and S, M and S). In the experiments with DS GCs of both ON and OFF types, it was shown that: (1) M and S channels were synergistic relative to each other and opponent to L channel. (2) Three-parameter signal (from L, M and S cones) is transformed to one-parameter signal at the output of DS GC, thus illustrating the principle of univariance. (3) In the experiments with OS GCs, it was shown that L and M channels were synergistic in the OFF-pathway, while the S channel was opponent to them. Our results suggested that photoreceptor synaptic connectivity of the bipolar cells hypothetically involved in the goldfish OS circuitry substantially differs from connectivity of bipolar cells presumably targeting DS GC. (4) To sum up, the results obtained on DS GCs confirmed the plausibility of proposed DS GC wiring diagrams; as to the OS circuitry of fish retina it still remains unclear and needs further investigation.

GABAergic neurons in basal forebrain (BF) nuclei project densely to all layers of the mouse main olfactory bulb (OB), the first relay in odor information processing. However, BF projection neurons are diverse and the contribution of each subtype to odor information processing is not known. In the present study, we used retrograde and anterograde tracing methods together with whole-brain light-sheet analyses, patch-clamp recordings coupled with optogenetic and chemogenetic approaches during spontaneous odor discrimination, and go/no-go odor discrimination/learning tests to characterize the synaptic targets in the OB of BF calretinin-expressing (CR+) GABAergic cells and to reveal their functional implications.

The dentate gyrus (DG) in hippocampus is reported to perform pattern separation, converting similar inputs into different outputs and thus avoiding memory interference. Previous studies have found that human and mice with epilepsy have significant pattern separation defects and a portion of adult-born granule cells (abGCs) migrate abnormally into the hilus, forming hilus ectopic granule cells (HEGCs). For the lack of relevant pathophysiological experiments, how HEGCs affect pattern separation remains unclear.

Supercritical (sc) CO in geologic carbon sequestration (GCS) can chemically and mechanically deteriorate wellbore cement, raising concerns for long-term operations. In contrast to the conventional view of "sulfate attack" on cement, we found that adding 0.15 M sulfate to the acidic brine can significantly reduce the impact of scCO attack on Portland cement, resulting in stronger cement than that found in a sulfate-free system.
