Purpose: To compare the incidence of postoperative endophthalmitis before and after the implementation of a preoperative surgical site preparation protocol for cataract surgery.
Design: Retrospective cohort study.
Methods: Records of patients with postoperative endophthalmitis between January 2006 and August 2013 were reviewed. A revised protocol implemented after January 2009 included the addition of preoperative 0.3% topical tobramycin, 10% povidone-iodine for cleansing, and using a disposable sterile drape. The incidence, microbiological profile, and outcomes of these cases were analyzed.
Results: The incidence of preprotocol endophthalmitis was significantly higher than in the postprotocol period (P = 0.018). More patients in the preprotocol group grew Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pneumoniae as compared with those in the postprotocol group (P = 0.014). A smaller number of patients attained a poor visual outcome after the implementation of the revised protocol (P = 0.035).
Conclusions: In our study, the addition of antibiotic eye drops before cataract surgery and perioperative cleansing with 10% povidone-iodine were effective means to reduce the incidence of postoperative endophthalmitis.

Methods: All cases of postoperative endophthalmitis over the last 17 years were reviewed. Incidence rates of endophthalmitis for all cataract surgeries (current procedural terminology codes 66982 and 66984) performed by 26 surgeons were calculated.

Purpose: To analyze the latest annual trends in immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) and delayed sequential bilateral cataract surgery (DSBCS) among patients with bilateral cataracts in Korea, and to identify the factors influencing the choice of surgery and the outcomes associated with ISBCS and DSBCS.
Methods: This retrospective, nationwide cohort study included all patients aged 65 and older who were covered by the Korean National Health Insurance and underwent ISBCS or DSBCS from 2016 to 2021. The study recorded yearly numbers of ISBCS and DSBCS procedures, the interval between surgeries in DSBCS cases, patient demographics, types of implanted intraocular lenses (IOLs), and the incidence of cystoid macular edema and endophthalmitis following ISBCS or DSBCS.

Methods: Ninety-two patients were included: 48 received corneal tattooing, and 44 were fitted with ocular prostheses. Anophthalmic surgery was indicated for trauma, painful blind eye, endophthalmitis, tumor, and corneal ulcer, while corneal tattooing was performed for trauma, corneal ulcer, and endophthalmitis.
