Introduction: The pathophysiology of coronary artery ectasia (CAE) has not been clearly identified, although multiple abnormalities including arteritis, endothelial dysfunction, and atherothrombosis have been reported. Several studies have demonstrated that higher serum bilirubin inhibits the inflammation and proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells; also there is a relationship between serum bilirubin and cardiovascular disease. However, the relationship between bilirubin and CAE is still unknown.
Aim: We compared serum bilirubin concentration between CAE patients and controls.
Material And Methods: This study included 50 CAE patients (20 male, mean age: 60.26 ±10.6 years) and 30 control persons (10 male, mean age: 57.86 ±11.6 years). These participants underwent concurrent routine biochemical tests and leukocyte count, hemoglobin, hematocrit and platelet count in whole blood. These parameters were compared between groups.
Results: No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of basic characteristics. Total, direct and indirect serum bilirubin levels were significantly lower among persons with CAE patients than controls (0.37 ±0.4 vs. 0.71 ±0.6 and 0.13 ±0.1 vs. 0.27 ±0.2 and 0.24 ±0.2 vs. 0.43 ±0.4 mg/dl; all p<0.001, respectively).
Conclusions: Our study revealed a relationship between serum bilirubin and CAE.

The aggregation of proteins, peptides and amino acids has been a keen subject of interest owing to their implications in metabolic disorders. In this work, we investigated the self-aggregation of the unmodified aromatic amino acid l-tryptophan (Trp) into unusual spherical microstructures. Using fluorescence spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), we detail the time-dependent transformation of monomeric tryptophan into spherical aggregates with distinct fluorescence characteristics (λ = 345 nm, λ = 430 nm) compared to the monomer.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the risk factors of hypokalemia after radical resection of esophageal cancer (EC) and establish a nomogram risk prediction model to evaluate hypokalemia risk after esophagectomy. Thus, this study provides a reference for the clinical development of intervention measures.
Methods: Clinical data of EC patients who underwent radical surgery from January 2020 to November 2022 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University were retrospectively collected.

Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of the preoperative serum albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC).
Methods: Preoperative ALBI data from 1506 CRC patients were categorized into high-value and low-value groups, and the clinicopathological characteristics of these groups were compared. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was employed to investigate the risk factors associated with distant metastasis.

Introduction: Datura stramonium (DS) possesses strong medicinal and therapeutic potential but has been rarely evaluated in this context.
Methods: The present study was intended to evaluate the antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and nephroprotective potential of the crude methanolic leaf extract and ethyl acetate, chloroform, n-hexane, and aqueous fractions of DS in paracetamol-intoxicated rabbits. Paracetamol (2 g/Kg BW) was applied to induce liver and kidney injury in rabbits while the methanolic extract and fractions of DS were applied in the dose range of 150 mg/Kg to 300 mg/Kg body weight for 21 days.

Objective: Impaired right ventricular (RV)-pulmonary arterial (PA) coupling, calculated by measuring the tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) to pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP), can be used as an early indicator of right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) in patients with heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Patients suffering from HFrEF experience improvements in left ventricular (LV) function through the administration of sacubitril/valsartan therapy. In addition, the albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score was associated with the fluid overload status and adverse clinical outcomes in patients with heart failure.
