Low birth weight in a municipality in the southeast region of Brazil.

Rev Bras Enferm

Escola Paulista de Enfermagem, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brasil.

Published: October 2017

Objective: to identify the prevalence of low birth weight in the city of São Paulo.

Method: epidemiological cross-sectional study with data collected by means of the Brazilian Live Birth Information System related to births occurred in the city of São Paulo between 2007 and 2013. Maternal, gestational, childbirth, and neonatal variables were analyzed descriptively and by association.

Results: 9.65% (1,342,655) of live births were underweight (mean of 3234.55 grams in the term group and 2312.17 in the pre-term group) with a mean maternal age of 27.53 years old. The risk factors identified include maternal age, not having a partner, low maternal level of education, other race rather than white, pre-term pregnancy, multiple births, low number of prenatal check-ups, and cesarean delivery.

Conclusion: knowledge of this evidence favors planning the care provided by defining strategies to reduce it and consequently improve maternal and infant health care.

Background: Litter size in mice is an important fitness and economic feature that is controlled by several genes and influenced by non-genetic factors too. High positive selection pressure in each generation for Litter size at birth (LSB), resulted in the development of high and low prolific lines of inbred Swiss albino mice (SAM). Despite uniform management conditions, these lines showed variability in LSB across the generation.

Di-2-(ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) is a phthalate derivative used extensively in a wide range of materials, such as medical devices, toys, cosmetics, and personal care products. Many mechanisms, including epigenetics, may be involved in the effects of phthalates on brain development. In this study, Sprague-Dawley male rats were obtained 21-23 days after their birth (post-weaning) and were exposed to DEHP during the prepubertal period with low-dose DEHP (DEHP-L, 30 mg/kg/day) and high-dose DEHP (DEHP-H, 60 mg/kg/day, 37 days) until the end of adolescence (PND 60).
