The dynamics of 2-nitrofluorene (2-NF) in deuterated acetonitrile is studied using UV pump, IR probe femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Upon excitation to the vibrationally excited S1 state, the excited-state population of 2-NF branches into two different relaxation pathways. One route leads to intersystem crossing (ISC) to the triplet manifold within a few hundred femtoseconds and the other to internal conversion (IC) to the ground state. The experiments indicate that after relaxation to the energetic minimum on S1, 2-NF undergoes internal conversion to the ground state in about 15 ps. IC within the triplet manifold is also observed as the initially populated triplet state relaxes to T1 in about 6 ps. Rotational anisotropy measurements corroborate the assignment of the transient IR frequencies and indicate a rotational diffusion time of 2-NF in the solvent of about 14 ps. The combined set of results provides a unified picture of the dynamics in photoexcited 2-NF. This to our knowledge is the first example using femtosecond vibrational spectroscopy for the study of the fundamental photoinduced processes in nitroaromatic compounds.

The synthesis, electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, photophysical and light induced electron transfer reactions in two new anthanthrene quinodimethanes have been studied and analyzed in the context of dynamic electrochemistry. Their properties are dependent on the interconversion between folded and twisted forms, which are separated by a relatively small energy range, thus allowing to explore their interconversion by variable temperature measurements. The photophysics of these molecules is mediated by a diradical excited state with a twisted structure that habilitates rapid intersystem crossing.

Spectroscopy and Excited-State Dynamics of Methyl Ferulate in Molecular Beams.

The spectroscopic and dynamic properties of methyl ferulate─a naturally occurring ultraviolet-protecting filter─and microsolvated methyl ferulate have been studied under molecular beam conditions using resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations. We demonstrate and rationalize how the phenyl substitution pattern affects the state ordering of the lower excited singlet state manifold and what the underlying reason is for the conformation-dependent Franck-Condon (FC) activity in the UV-excitation spectra. Studies on microsolvated methyl ferulate reveal potential coordination sites and the influence of such coordination on the spectroscopic properties.

We investigate the dynamical interplay between the different triplet-pair spin states that are formed in the intramolecular singlet fission process in a series of pentacene-based dimers covalently bonded to a phenylene linker in ortho, meta, and para positions. Using first-principles calculations and a density matrix quantum dynamical approach we show that the spin dipole-dipole interaction leads to significant population of the quintet spin manifold in these regioisomers when the singlet, triplet and quintet triplet-pair states are quasidegenerate. Furthermore, we also show that the relative arrangement of the pentacene-like moieties has a profound impact on the dynamics of the spin-mixing process, affecting both the relative population of the different spin-states involved in the dynamics and the time scale of the process.

Theoretical insight into photodeactivation mechanisms of adenine-uracil and adenine-thymine nucleobase pairs.

Institute of Advanced Materials, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, Wybrzeże Wyspiańskiego 27, 50-370 Wrocław, Poland.

In this work, several plausible intra- and intermolecular photoinduced processes of the Watson-Crick base pairs of adenine with uracil (A-U) or thymine (A-T) according to the results of spin component scaling variant of algebraic diagrammatic construction up to the second order [SCS-ADC(2)] calculations are discussed. Although widely explored, these systems lack complete characterization of possible intramolecular relaxation channels perturbed by intermolecular interactions. In particular, we address the still open debate on photodeactivation purine-ring puckering at the C2 or C6-atom position of adenine.
