The use of porous polyethylene in reconstructive surgery of the auricle is becoming increasingly accepted. This is a single-stage procedure providing pleasing cosmetic rehabilitation. Further advantages are the possibility of early implantation and the lack of complications caused by harvesting costal cartilage. Additional hearing restoration using middle ear implants allows functional rehabilitation at an early stage.

Former studies have established that individuals with a cochlear implant (CI) for treating single-sided deafness experience improved speech processing after implantation. However, it is not clear how each ear contributes separately to improve speech perception over time at the behavioural and neural level. In this longitudinal EEG study with four different time points, we measured neural activity in response to various temporally and spectrally degraded spoken words presented monaurally to the CI and non-CI ears (5 left and 5 right ears) in 10 single-sided CI users and 10 age- and sex-matched individuals with normal hearing.

Choroid plexus-targeted viral gene therapy for alpha-mannosidosis, a prototypical neurometabolic lysosomal storage disease.

The choroid plexuses (CP) are highly vascularized structures that project into the ventricles of the vertebrate brain. The polarized epithelia of the CP produce cerebrospinal fluid by transporting water and ions into the ventricles from the blood and normally secrete a large number of proteins. We assessed the feasibility of selective CP transduction with recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) gene therapy vectors for treatment of lysosomal storage disease (LSD), a broad category of neurometabolic illness associated with significant burdens to affected patients and their families.

Introduction: In the course of middle ear diseases, a disturbed influence of the system transmitting sound through the middle ear on the function of the inner ear is observed. The audiometric consequence of the disease process taking place in the middle ear is the shift in bone conduction (BC) thresholds, which is called pseudoperceptive hearing loss (the so-called Carhart effect). The natural process of aging of the hearing system (age-related hearing loss) means that the manifestation of the Carhart effect varies in different age groups.

Presbycusis, also referred to as age-related hearing loss, poses a substantial burden on both individuals and society. The hallmark of presbycusis is a progressive decrease in auditory sensitivity. Irreversible hearing loss occurs due to the limited regenerative capacity of spiral neurons and peripheral cochlear hair cells (HCs).

Purpose: People with sensory impairments (SI) face unique challenges in out-of-home care, especially in oral health (OH) care, compared to the general population. Various assistive technologies (ATs) and media are used to influence OH behaviors and outcomes for individuals with SI. This systematic review (SR) aimed to identify the types of ATs and assess their effectiveness for individuals with SI.
