Over several months, 14 people were admitted in 6 hospitals with severe symptoms of intoxication with psychoactive substances as a result of mass poisoning. All symptoms occurred after taking a drink that contained crushed phenazepam tablets. Samples of blood (=10) and urine (=6) taken from 14 sufferers for forensic, chemical and toxicological examination were analyzed using the HPLC-MS/MS method.

β-Phenyl-γ-aminobutyric acid (phenibut) is an analog of the inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) that was first synthesized in Russia in the early 1960s. It is marketed as a nootropic (smart drug) to improve cognitive performance, and to treat generalized and social anxiety, insomnia, and alcohol withdrawal. The use of phenibut is legal in the USA and it is widely available online without a prescription.

Patients with brain death have by definition irreversible and complete loss of brainstem reflexes. Before a definite diagnosis of brain death can be confirmed, all potential confounders must be thoroughly excluded. Baclofen intoxication is a rare cause of brain death mimic characterised by transient deep coma and absence of brainstem reflexes and might be mistaken with brain death.
