A cancrinite type aluminoborate with gigantic 24-ring channels has been made under solvothermal conditions using Al(i-PrO)3 as the Al source and amines as the structure directing agents. Its framework is alternately constructed from B5O10 clusters and AlO4 units, no Al-O-Al linkages exist in the structure. Notably, the wall of the 24-ring channels has odd 11-ring windows, resulting in an unprecedented 3D intersecting channel system.

This review considers noncovalent bonds between divalent chalcogen centers. In the first part we present X-ray data taken from the solid state structures of dimethyl- and diphenyl-dichalcogenides as well as oligoalkynes kept by alkyl-sulfur, -selenium, and -tellurium groups. Furthermore, we analyzed the solid state structures of medium sized (12-24 ring size) selenium coronands and medium to large rings with alkyne and alkene units between two chalcogen centers.

Channel zapping: PKU-1 and newly synthesized PKU-2 (Al(2)B(5)O(9)(OH)(3)⋅n H(2)O; see picture) possess microporous structures with 18-ring and 24-ring channels, respectively. They show high reactivity and size selectivity in the cyanosilylation of aldehydes as heterogeneous Lewis acid catalysts. The different channel sizes determine the substrate selectivity.
