We show that, all other conditions being equal, bond cleavage in the middle of molecules is entropically much more favored than bond cleavage at the end. Multiple experimental and theoretical approaches have been used to study the selectivity for bond cleavage or dissociation in the middle versus the end of both covalent and supramolecular adducts and the extensive implications for other fields of chemistry including, e.g., chain transfer, polymer degradation, and control agent addition are discussed. The observed effects, which are a consequence of the underlying entropic factors, were predicted on the basis of simple theoretical models and demonstrated via high-temperature (HT) NMR spectroscopy of self-assembled supramolecular diblock systems as well as temperature-dependent size-exclusion chromatography (TD SEC) of covalently bonded Diels-Alder step-growth polymers.

Emerging photovoltaics for outer space applications are one of the many examples where radiation hard molecular semiconductors are essential. However, due to a lack of general design principles, their resilience against extra-terrestrial high-energy radiation can currently not be predicted. In this work, the discovery of radiation hard materials is accelerated by combining the strengths of high-throughput, lab automation and machine learning.

Background: Successive cleavages of amyloid precursor protein C-terminal 99 residues (APP-C99) by human γ-secretase result in amyloid-β peptides (Aβs) of varying lengths, the main constituents of amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's disease patients. Most cleavages have a step size of three residues, as exemplified by sequential generation of Aβ49, Aβ46, Aβ43, and Aβ40.
Method: To elucidate the mechanism of substrate cleavage, we determined atomic structures of human γ-secretase bound individually to APP-C99, Aβ49, Aβ46, and Aβ43.

Borenium ions have attracted significant attention in organic transformations due to their strong Lewis acidity. The reported borenium ions are often stabilized by sterically demanding substituents and strong coordination bonds. Herein, we have synthesized a small steric borenium-equivalent NHBHOTf and subjected it to the exhaustive reduction of a carboxylic functional group to a methyl group, which shows broad functional group tolerance.

Domino cascade reactions, which can construct multiple bonds in one pot, are efficient methods to synthesize N-heterocycles and other useful skeletons. Herein, we report an expedient synthesis of polysubstituted benzo[][1,5]naphthyridine via Mn(III)-mediated C-C bond cleavage of cyclopropanols. These reactions were initiated by addition of β-carbonyl radicals, generated from cyclopropyl alcohols in the presence of Mn(III), to 2-(2-isocyanophenyl)acetonitriles to give quinolin-3-amines, which went through intramolecular cyclizations and dehydrogenation to give the final products.

The sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis necessitates applied bias to facilitate electron transfer as well as bond cleavage and formation. Traditional electrocatalysis focuses on analyzing the effects of electron transfer, while the role of charge accumulation induced by the applied overpotential has not been thoroughly investigated. To explore the influence mechanism of bias-driven charge accumulation, capacitive Mn is incorporated into IrO to regulate the local electronic structure and the adsorption behavior.
