Purpose: To report the potential benefit of pneumatic displacement with perfluoropropane in the acute treatment of traumatic macular hole and submacular hemorrhage.
Methods: This article is a descriptive case report. Intravitreal injection of 0.3 mL of undiluted C3F8 was performed in an outpatient clinic setting, with strict face-down positioning for 7 days thereafter.
Patient: An otherwise healthy 22-year-old white man with no past ocular history.
Results And Discussion: Initial examination and optical coherence tomography documented significant displacement of the submacular hemorrhage, and stabilization of the macular hole 24 hours after pneumatic retinopexy was performed. Best-corrected visual acuity on presentation was counting fingers in the affected eye, which improved to 20/50 with a closed macular hole 6 weeks after his initial injury.
