Purpose: To compare the incidence and characteristics of retinal complications following implantation of two types of phakic intraocular lenses (PIOLs) in patients with myopia.
Methods: In this comparative, retrospective study, 603 eyes of 344 patients with myopia underwent implantation of either an Artisan iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens IOL (Artisan; Ophtec, Groningen, Netherlands) (Artisan group) or a Visian implantable collamer lens (ICL; STAAR Surgical Company, Monrovia, CA) (ICL group) between June 2005 and December 2013. Preoperative, operative, and postoperative clinical data were collected on the incidence of retinal complications, including rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) or choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM).
Results: The Artisan lens was implanted in 185 (30.68%) eyes and 418 (69.32%) eyes underwent ICL implantation. Mean follow-up was 26.78 months (range: 9 days to 98 months). Mean preoperative spherical equivalent (SE) was -12.44 ± 4.43 D (range: -1.13 to -31.00 D). The overall rate of retinal complications was 1%. Postoperatively, 3 (0.7%) eyes developed RRD in the ICL group, and no eyes developed RRD in the Artisan group. Submacular hemorrhage was observed in 1 (0.24%) eye in the ICL group. Two (1%) eyes developed CNVM in the Artisan group. The mean time from PIOL implantation to retinal complications was 15.6 months (range: 0.03 to 43 months).
Conclusions: Implantation of ICL or Artisan phakic IOL demonstrated comparable rates of retinal complications. Anterior chamber PIOL does not increase the risk of retinal detachment or CNVM in patients with myopia.

Background: Pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (CME) following primary anterior-chamber intraocular lens (ACIOL) implantations is commonly seen. Intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injections have shown significant improvement in visual acuity and retinal thickness in refractory pseudophakic CME. Pseudohypopyon following IVTA injection is a known entity.

Diabetic retinopathy, a microvascular complication of diabetes, is the leading cause of blindness in adults, but the molecular mechanism of its development remains unclear. Retinal mitochondrial DNA is damaged and hypermethylated, and mtDNA-encoded genes are downregulated. Expression of a long noncoding RNA (larger than 200 nucleotides, which does not translate into proteins), encoded by mtDNA, cytochrome B (Lnc), is also downregulated.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound-guided ruthenium (Ru 106) plaque brachytherapy for treatment of exudative retinal detachment in diffuse choroidal haemangioma (DCH).
Methods: Retrospective analysis of four paediatric patients treated with ultrasound-guided Ru 106 plaque brachytherapy for DCH with total exudative retinal detachment directed to the thickest part of the DCH. A dose of 40 Gy to the tumour apex was delivered in all patients.

Introduction: Retinal capillary hemangioma (RCH) is a benign vascular hamartoma that can occur sporadically or as a manifestation of Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease. If left untreated, it results in adverse ocular complications depending on its location and eventual visual loss.
Case Presentation: We present a 50-year-old man who was a known case of VHL with history of left eye vision loss in the left eye at the age of 30 years.

Purpose: To assess the 12-month outcomes in subjects developing macular neovascularization (MNV) during intravitreal avacincaptad pegol (IVA) treatment for geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Methods: This research was conducted as a case-controlled, retrospective study of AMD subjects undergoing IVA treatment for GA from two private practice institutions. Subjects were divided into 1) a Study Group of patients who developed MNV and then underwent anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy during the study period, and 2) a Control Group of patients who were complication-free during the study period.
