Although copper-based chalcopyrite materials such as CuInS2 have been considered promising photocathodes for solar water splitting, the fabrication route for a nanostructure with vertical orientation has not yet been developed. Here, a fabrication route for vertically aligned CuInS2 nanorod arrays from an aqueous solution using anodic aluminum oxide template-assisted growth and transfer is presented. The nanorods exhibit a phase-pure CuInS2 chalcopyrite structure and cathodic photocurrent response without co-catalyst loading. Small particles of CdS and ZnS were conformally decorated onto CuInS2 nanorods using a successive ion layer adsorption and reaction method. With surface modification of CdS/ZnS, the photoelectrochemical properties of CuInS2 nanorod arrays are enhanced via flat-band potential shift, as determined by analyses of onset potential and Mott-Schottky plots.

In this study, a CuInS/CuO/TiO nanotube (TNT) heterojunction-based hybrid material is reported for the selective detection of cholesterol and ibuprofen. Anodic TNTs were co-decorated with CuO and CuInS quantum dots (QDs) using a modified chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. QDs help trigger the chemical oxidation of cholesterol by cathodically generating hydroxyl radicals (˙OH).

Telomerase, as a specialized reverse transcriptase, plays a vital role in early cancer diagnostics and prognosis; thus, developing efficient sensing technologies is of vital importance. Herein, an innovative "signal-on-off" photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform was developed for ultrasensitive evaluation of telomerase activity based on an electron-transfer tunneling distance regulation strategy and DNAzyme-triggerable biocatalytic precipitation. Concretely, cascade internal electric fields between CuInS quantum dots (QDs), graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-CN NSs), and TiO nanorod arrays (NRAs) were developed to realize cascade electron extraction and hole transfer.

In the syntheses of ternary I-III-VI compounds, such as CuInS, it is often difficult to balance three precursor reactivities to achieve the desired size, shape, and atomic composition of nanocrystals. Cation exchange reactions offer an attractive two-step alternative, by producing a binary compound with the desired morphology and incorporating another atomic species postsynthetically. However, the kinetics of such cation exchange reactions, especially for anisotropic nanocrystals, are still not fully understood.

Photocathodic immunosensors generally exhibit fortified anti-interference abilities than photoanodic ones against the detection in biological specimens. Yet, the weak photocurrent signals of the photocathodes have limited evidently the detection performance. Herein, an efficient and feasible photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor was developed on the basis of the featured photocathode-photoanode operating system.

Colloidal heteronanocrystals allow for the synergistic combination of properties of different materials. For example, spatial separation of the photogenerated electron and hole can be achieved by coupling different semiconductors with suitable band offsets in one single nanocrystal, which is beneficial for improving the efficiency of photocatalysts and photovoltaic devices. From this perspective, axially segmented semiconductor heteronanorods with a type-II band alignment are particularly attractive since they ensure the accessibility of both photogenerated charge carriers.
