Modeling human neuronal aging at a cellular level remains challenging. Human neurons are accessible from iPSCs, but during reprogramming age-associated traits of somatic cells get lost. In this issue of Cell Stem Cell, Mertens et al. (2015) demonstrate that neurons obtained by direct cell conversion retain age-associated transcriptional traits and functional deficits of the donor cell population.

Nitro compounds are key synthetic intermediates used as enabling tools in synthesis and found in a large range of essential compounds, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and various organic dyes. Despite recent methodological developments, the industrial preparation of nitro compounds still suffers from harsh reaction conditions, along with poor selectivity and a problematic environmental footprint. Although biological enzymatic methods exist, mild approaches for bionitration are still underexplored.

Transition-metal-catalyzed enantioselective C-H activation has transformed the landscape of asymmetric synthesis, enabling the efficient conversion of C-H bonds into C-C and carbon-heteroatom (C-X) bonds. However, the formation of C-S bonds through enantioselective C-H thiolation remains underdeveloped due to challenges such as catalyst deactivation and competitive coordination of sulfur-containing compounds with chiral ligands. Herein, we report an unprecedented approach to constructing sulfur-substituted planar chiral ferrocenes (PCFs) through copper-mediated enantioselective C-H thiolation enabled by only a 2.

Fibrinogen-like (Fgl2) protein belongs to fibrinogen super family, which catalyzes the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin and is involved in the coagulation process. There are two different forms of functional Fgl2 protein: membrane associated Fgl2 (mFgl2) and soluble Fgl2 (sFgl2). mFgl2, as a type II transmembrane protein with property with prothrombinase activity from its N-terminal fragment, was extensively secreted or expressed by inflammatory macrophages, dendritic cells, Th1 cells and endothelial cells.

The ubiquitous presence of plastic waste presents a significant environmental challenge, characterized by its persistence and detrimental impacts on ecosystems. The valorization of plastic waste through conversion into high-value carbon materials offers a promising circular economy approach. This review critically examines the potential of plastic waste-derived activated carbon (PAC) as a sustainable and effective adsorbent for water remediation.

Photocatalytic reduction of CO to valuable chemicals is an effective strategy to address the environmental problems and energy crisis. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging materials known for their excellent diverse properties, albeit limited by special synthetic methods, including high temperature (120 °C) and the necessity of inert gas atmosphere. Herein, a novel synthesis method under room temperature and air was optimized to form TpPa-COF (TP-COF) by p-phenylenediamine (Pa) and 2,4,6-triformyl phloroglucinol (Tp) through electrostatic self-assembly.
