Impact of water, sanitation, and hygiene indicators on enteric viral pathogens among under-5 children in low resource settings.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322, USA.

Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are the primary risks of exposure to enteric viral infection. Our study aimed to describe the role of WASH conditions and practices as risk factors for enteric viral infections in children under 5. Literature on the risk factors associated with all-cause diarrhea masks the taxa-specific drivers of diarrhea from specific pathogens, limiting the application of relevant control strategies.

Importance: Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration gave premarketing approval to an algorithm based on its purported ability to identify individuals at genetic risk for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, the clinical utility of the candidate genetic variants included in the algorithm has not been independently demonstrated.

Objective: To assess the utility of 15 genetic variants from an algorithm intended to predict OUD risk.

Objectives: To compare the plaque reducing efficacy of oil pulling with sesame oil compared to distilled water in a randomized, controlled, examiner-blinded parallel group study.

Materials And Methods: Forty probands without advanced periodontal disease of the University Hospital for Restorative Dentistry and Periodontology, Medical University of Innsbruck (Austria) were randomized allocated to test- (sesame oil) or control group (distilled water) and asked to pull daily in the morning for eight weeks with their allotted fluid for 15 min. Rustogi Modified Navy Plaque Index (RMNPI) and gingival bleeding index were assessed at baseline and after four and eight weeks.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Dementia Research Centre, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, London, United Kingdom.

Background: Effective treatments are now available, which have demonstrated reductions in amyloid plaque burden while slowing cognitive decline in early symptomatic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Intervening before onset of cognitive impairment could provide greater benefit, particularly for individuals who carry an autosomal dominant mutation known to cause AD. To better guide the design of upcoming prevention trials, reliable sample size estimates for detecting relevant reductions in pathology are needed.
