A series of 12 normal, nine malignant, and three false positive gastric brushings were evaluated for a number of cytologic criteria; of these criteria, cell arrangement, presence of nuclear engulfment and signet ring cells, and N/C ratio proved to be the most reliable in differentiating benigh from malignant ulcers; it was concluded that use of these three characteristics could substantially reduce the number of false positive gastric brushing reports.

Brush border membrane (BBM) enzymes greatly affect the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of food nutrients. Despite their physiological importance, a step simulating the final stage of intestinal digestion has not yet been included in the harmonized protocols for in vitro digestion, primarily due to the challenges of replicating the dynamics of intestinal degradation. Herein, we propose an advancement toward a more physiologically relevant method, complementing the harmonized static gastric-duodenal digestion INFOGEST model with the missing small intestinal phase.

Introduction: Unsedated transnasal endoscopy (TNE) as transnasal esophagoscopy (TN-Eso) has emerged as a promising alternative to esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) under sedation to assess eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). We report our center's experience using single-use gastroscopes to perform sedation-free transnasal EGD (TN-EGD) with biopsies in an office-based setting.
Methods: A retrospective review was performed on patients with eosinophilic esophagitis who underwent office-based sedation-free TNE with topical analgesia and virtual reality (VR) procedural dissociation and distraction.
