Anatomy has remained an interest of physicians throughout the ages. The biliary tract spans from the liver to the hepatoduodenal mesentery, pancreas, and into the duodenum. Therefore, it is important for not only hepatobiliary surgeons but also general gastrointestinal surgeons, gastroenterologists, radiologists, and pathologists to be familiar with biliary anatomy and its variants.

Gadoxetic acid is an MRI contrast agent that has specific applications in the study of hepatobiliary disease. After being distributed in the vascular and extravascular spaces during the dynamic phase, gadoxetic acid is progressively taken up by hepatocytes and excreted to the bile ducts during the hepatobiliary phase. The information derived from the enhancement characteristics during dynamic and hepatobiliary phases is particularly relevant in the detection and characterization of focal liver lesions and in the evaluation of the structure and function of the liver and biliary system.

Hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) are a family of liver tumors that are associated with variable prognoses. Since the initial description of these tumors, the classification of HCAs has expanded and now includes eight distinct genotypic subtypes based on molecular analysis findings. These genotypic subtypes have unique derangements in their cellular biologic makeup that determine their clinical course and may allow noninvasive identification of certain subtypes.

Understanding liver anatomy and anatomic hilar vascular variants is important for the practicing surgeon. This knowledge is essential for cholecystectomy, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and upper GI surgery. The attached quiz is intended to provide a liver anatomy teaching guide for surgical oncology, transplant, and HPB fellows; general surgery residents; and medical students, as well as a refresher for general and GI surgeons.
