Recent behavioral evidence indicates a key role for intent in moral judgments of harmful acts (e.g. assault) but not impure acts (e.g. incest). We tested whether the neural responses in regions for mental state reasoning, including the right temporoparietal junction (RTPJ), are greater when people evaluate harmful vs impure violations. In addition, using multivoxel pattern analysis, we investigated whether the voxel-wise pattern in these regions distinguishes intentional from accidental actions, for either kind of violation. The RTPJ was preferentially recruited in response to harmful vs impure acts. Moreover, although its response was equally high for intentional and accidental acts, the voxel-wise pattern in the RTPJ distinguished intentional from accidental acts in the harm domain but not the purity domain. Finally, we found that the degree to which the RTPJ discriminated between intentional and accidental acts predicted the impact of intent information on moral judgments but again only in the harm domain. These findings reveal intent to be a uniquely critical factor for moral evaluations of harmful vs impure acts and shed light on the neural computations for mental state reasoning.

Hypertension is the predominant cause of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) globally, and essential hypertension (EH) represents a significant public health challenge due to its multifactorial etiology involving complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. However, the pathogenesis of EH is still unclear. Hypertension is a dysregulation in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and sympathetic nervous system, both regulating saline homeostasis and cardiovascular function.

The demand for greener energy sources necessitates the development of more efficient processes. Lignocellulosic biomass holds significant potential for biofuels production, but improvements in its enzymatic degradation are required to mitigate the susceptibility of enzymes by reaction products and pretreatment impurities. In this work, two cellobiohydrolases (CBHs) from the basidiomycete Phanerochaete chrysosporium (PcCel7C and PcCel7D) were heterologously expressed, characterized, and analyzed in the presence of their products (glucose and cellobiose) and harmful compounds commonly found in industrial processes (phenolics), as well as their adsorption to lignin and cellulose.

Waste LiFePO (LFP) batteries can be harmful to the environment and lead to waste of resources if not properly disposed of. In this study, an efficient and environmentally friendly method for solid-phase recycling waste LFP cathode material (W-LFP) is proposed. Most of the impurities in the W-LFP are removed by air firing.

Article Synopsis
  • - Non-targeted analysis is an advanced method used to identify unknown impurities and pollutants in pharmaceutical, biological, and environmental samples, overcoming the limitations of traditional targeted analysis which can only quantify known chemicals.
  • - This analytical approach employs high-end techniques like high-resolution mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, allowing researchers to uncover unidentified metabolites and compounds in complex mixtures.
  • - The review covers the latest advancements in non-targeted analysis, including sample collection and preparation processes, benefits and limitations of the method, as well as the importance of bioinformatics in managing large datasets for effective interpretation.
