The new genus Tropicosa is proposed based on species of some controversial Neotropical genera of lycosids. These spiders present a longitudinal dark stripe over the sternum in both sexes, median apophysis sinuous, tegular lobe evidently sclerotized and the epigyne with median septum anteriorly expanded and with a parallel, triangular hood. We transfer Alopecosa moesta (Holmberg), Schizocosa chelifasciata (Mello-Leitão) and Lycosa thorelli (Keyserling) to Tropicosa gen.

There are 44 species and subspecies of the genus Alopecosa known in Europe, and 13 of them have so far been listed as occurring in Poland. Alopecosa sulzeri (Pavesi, 1873) is a xero- and thermophilic species distributed in the western Palearctic. In Europe, it occurs primarily in the south-east, while it is rare in Central Europe.

Specimens belonging to Trochosa hispanica Simon, 1870 collected in different parts of the range were compared to determine whether they belong to the same species or represent a series of cryptic species. No significant differences were found between different populations. Most of the females examined have a kind of mating plug blocking the pathway of embolus, but not the copulatory openings like in other spiders.
