Setting: Tuberculosis spondylodiscitis (TS), or Pott's disease, an extra-pulmonary form of tuberculosis (TB), is rare and difficult to diagnose in children. Some cases of severe TB in children were recently explained by inborn errors of immunity affecting the interleukin-12/interferon-gamma (IL-12/IFN-γ) axis.

Objective: To analyse clinical data on Moroccan children with TS, and to perform immunological and genetic explorations of the IL-12/IFN-γ axis.

Design: We studied nine children with TS diagnosed between 2012 and 2014. We investigated the IL-12/IFN-γ circuit by both whole-blood assays and sequencing of the coding regions of 14 core genes of this pathway.

Results: A diagnosis of TS was based on a combination of clinical, biological, histological and radiological data. QuantiFERON(®)-TB Gold In-Tube results were positive in 75% of patients. Whole-blood assays showed normal IL-12 and IFN-γ production in all but one patient, who displayed impaired decreased response to IL-12. No candidate disease-causing mutations were detected in the exonic regions of the 14 genes.

Conclusions: TS diagnosis in children remains challenging, and is based largely on imaging. Further investigations of TS in children are required to determine the role of genetic defects in pathways that may or may not be related to the IL-12/IFN-γ axis.

Objective: Spinal tuberculosis (STB) and Brucella spondylitis (BS) represent two types of granulomatous infections affecting the spine, which exhibit significant similarities that often result in misdiagnosis and overlooked diagnoses during preoperative evaluations. This study aims to identify non-invasive evaluative indicators that facilitate the differentiation between STB and BS.

Methods: This study conducted a retrospective collection of clinical features, laboratory tests, and imaging characteristics from 89 patients diagnosed with STB and 66 patients diagnosed with BS.

This study aims to compare the expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) in osteoblasts infiltrated with H37Rv (H37Rv) and to understand the differential bone destruction in spinal tuberculosis (STB) versus spondylitis (BS). Primary osteoblasts were isolated and cultured from the cranial bones of 2-5 days old mice and characterized by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining and alizarin red staining (ARS). H37Rv and were cultured to the logarithmic phase, and transfection solutions were prepared.

Department of Spine Surgery and Orthopaedics, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, 410008, People's Republic of China.

Introduction: Tuberculosis is prevalent in high-burden countries. However, spinal multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in patients with normal immune function is a disease that is prone to misdiagnosis and even delayed diagnosis. Recently, we successfully treated one such patient.

Objective: In the current study, to demonstrate the advantages of oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF), we focused on the therapeutics for lumbar spinal tuberculosis with the comparison of three treatments, including anterior approach, posterior approach, and OLIF combined with posterior percutaneous pedicle screw fixation.

Methods: This study included patients with lumbar spinal tuberculosis from July 2015 to June 2018. We divided these patients into three groups: 35 patients underwent an anterior-only approach (Group A), 36 patients underwent a posterior-only approach (Group B), and 31 patients underwent OLIF combined with posterior percutaneous pedicle screw fixation (Group C).
