AI Article Synopsis

  • This study compares pain relief and motor function recovery outcomes in patients with osteoid osteoma treated using magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) versus radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
  • A total of 30 patients participated, with similar success rates seen in pain relief (94% for MRgFUS, 100% for RFA) and low treatment failure rates (6.6% for MRgFUS, 0% for RFA).
  • Despite the small sample size, results indicate that MRgFUS is effective and safe, showing comparable benefits to RFA with no major complications observed.

Article Abstract

Objectives: To compare outcomes in pain relief and motor functional recovery in patients with an osteoid osteoma treated by magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) or radiofrequency ablation (RFA) using a propensity score matching study design.

Methods: Thirty patients with osteoid osteomas were included in this institutional review board (IRB)-approved study. MRgFUS was performed in 15 subjects. These subjects were matched by propensity analysis with a group of 15 subjects treated by RFA. Pain relief in terms of complete response (CR) and motor functional recovery were measured.

Results: A similar proportion of subjects treated by MRgFUS (94 %) or RFA (100 %) experienced CR 12 weeks after treatment, with no significant difference. The improvement in pain control following MRgFUS or RFA paralleled with improved motor functional recovery. The treatment failure rate was 6.6 % in the MRgFUS group and 0 % in the RFA group. No major complications were observed following either ablative treatment.

Conclusions: Although this study involved a limited number of patients, MRgFUS favourably improves perceived pain and motor functional recovery, with no major complications. No difference was found in the achievement of primary and secondary outcome measures with respect to RFA.

Key Points: • To demonstrate the effectiveness of a recent technique for treating osteoid osteoma • MRgFUS results compared with results of the gold standard treatment (RFA) • MRgFUS is effective both from a clinical and functional point of view • No significant side effects compared with RFA.

Background: Intraneural edema is an important factor in the pathophysiology of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a manual treatment widely used to treat edema in a variety of conditions.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of MLD on intraneural edema of the median nerve in CTS patients, as well as its impact on symptom severity and hand function.

Loss of function in the subunits of the GTPase-activating protein (GAP) activity toward Rags-1 (GATOR1) complex, an amino-acid sensitive negative regulator of the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1), is implicated in both genetic familial epilepsies and NDDs (Baldassari et al., 2018). Previous studies have found seizure phenotypes and increased activity resulting from conditional deletion of GATOR1 function from forebrain excitatory neurons (Yuskaitis et al.

Developmental trajectories of visual orienting functions in children born very or extremely preterm.

Vestibular and Oculomotor Research Group, Department of Neuroscience, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Preterm birth increases the risk of neurodevelopmental impairments, such as Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI), which affects visual processing. Assessing visual functions in young children is challenging with traditional methods that often rely on verbal/motor responses. The aim of the study was to investigate the developmental trajectories of Visual Orienting Functions (VOF) in children born very preterm (<32 weeks gestational age) between 2 and 5 years corrected age (CA) using eye tracking.

The main objective of this case and video is to demonstrate the surgical technique of navigated full-endoscopic decompression and sequestrectomy at the C7-T1 level to alleviate C8 nerve root compression and manage cervicobrachialgia. Cervicobrachialgia resulting from C7-T1 disc herniation is a quite rare yet painful condition that can significantly impair motor function in the upper limb. Traditionally, open surgeries can be invasive, with prolonged recovery times and/or fusion of the level with adjacent segment disease.

Background: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is a common clinical problem that can result in partial or complete loss of sensory, motor, and autonomic functions. Tetrahydropalmatine (THP), a Corydalis yanhusuo-derived phytochemical alkaloid, possesses hypnotic, soothing, analgesic, and other effects, but little is known about the effect of THP on moderating peripheral nerve regeneration and its possible underlying mechanism of action.

Purpose: In this study, we aim to elucidate the protective function of THP on PNI and further reveal the underlying pharmacological mechanisms.
