Stimuli-responsive structural reorganizations play an important role in biological processes, often in combination with kinetic control scenarios. In supramolecular mimics of such systems, light has been established as the perfect external trigger. Here, we report on the light-driven structural rearrangement of a small, self-assembled Pd3L6 ring based on photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) ligands into a rhombicuboctahedral Pd24L48 sphere measuring about 6.4 nm across. When the wavelength is changed, this interconversion can be fully reversed, as confirmed by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry. The sphere was visualized by AFM, TEM, and GISAXS measurements. Due to dissimilarities in the photoswitch conformations, the interconversion rates between the two assemblies are drastically different in the two directions.

Incorporating photoisomerizable moieties within drugs offers the possibility of rapid and reversible light-dependent switching between active and inactive configurations. Here, we developed a photoswitchable adenosine A receptor (AR) agonist that confers optical control on this G protein-coupled receptor through noninvasive topical skin irradiation in an animal model of psoriasis. This was achieved by covalently bonding an adenosine-5'-methyluronamide moiety to a diazocine photochrome, whose singular photoswitching properties facilitated repeated interconversion between a thermally stable, biologically inactive agonist form and a photoinduced, pharmacologically active configuration.

With global push of hydrogen economy, efficient scenarios for hydrogen storage, transportation, and generation are indispensable. Here we devise a strategy for controllable hydrogen fuel storage and retrieval via light-switched CO-to-HCOOH interconversion. To realize it, palladium sulfide nanocluster catalysts with multiple specific functionalities are directly searched by our home-developed inverse design approach based on genetic algorithm (IDOGA) and calculations.

A light-responsive self-complementary crown ether/ammonium conjugate bearing an arylazopyrazole photoswitch as a spacer can be switched between a [2]daisy chain (-isomer) and a lasso-type pseudo[1]rotaxane (-isomer) by light.

The E/Z isomerization process of a uracil-azobenzene derivative in which the nucleobase is conjugated to a phenyldiazene tail is studied in view of its ability to form triply H-bonded complexes with a suitably complementary 2,6-diacetylamino-4-pyridine ligand. UV-vis and H NMR investigations of the photochemical and thermal isomerization kinetics show that the thermal Z → E interconversion is 4-fold accelerated upon formation of the H-bonded complex. DFT calculations show that the formation of triple H-bonds triggers a significant elongation of the N═N double bond, caused by an increase of its π* antibonding character.
