Ovarian injury can be induced by heat stress. Mice granulosa cells (GCs) are critical for normal ovarian function and they synthesize a variety of growth factors and steroids for the follicle. Furthermore, the growth, differentiation, and maturate of theca cells and oocyte are dependent upon the synthesis of GCs. Due to the critical biological functions of GCs, we hypothesized that the apoptosis and dysfunction of GCs could also be induced by heat stress. We analyzed GCs apoptosis and evaluated the expression of apoptosis-related genes (caspase-3, Bax, Bcl-2) after heat treatment. Radio immunity assay was used to measure the secretion of 17β-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4). RT-PCR was used to evaluate the expression of steroids-related genes (Star, CYP11A1, CYP19A1). Our data suggested that heat stress inhibited GCs proliferation, induced GCs apoptosis, decreased E2 and P4 secretion, reduced the steroids-related genes mRNA expression. Besides, our results indicated that heat treatment-induced apoptosis of GCs through the mitochondrial pathway, which involved caspase-3 and Bax. The reduction in steroids secretion and mRNA expression of Star, CYP11A1, and CYP19A1 might also play a role in heat-induced GCs apoptosis and ovarian injury.

We investigated the effects of exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) on grain filling, starch accumulation, and endogenous hormones in maize (both the heat-tolerant maize variety Zhengdan 958 (ZD958) and the heat-sensitive variety Xianyu 335 (XY335)) under early post-anthesis high temperature stress by simulating high temperature stress for a period of 6 to 12 days post-anthesis in 2022 and 2023. There were three treatments: spraying water at ambient temperature as the control, spraying water at high temperature, and spraying ABA at high temperature. The results showed that early post-anthesis high temperature stress resulted in a significant reduction in grain weight and yield in maize, with XY335 showing a greater reduction than ZD958.

Background: This study explored the potential of electrogastrography (EGG) and heart rate variability (HRV) as psychophysiological markers in experimental pain research related to the gut-brain axis. We investigated responses to the experience of pain from the visceral (rectal distension) and somatic (cutaneous heat) pain modalities, with a focus on elucidating sex differences in EGG and HRV responses.
Methods: In a sample of healthy volunteers (29 males, 43 females), EGG and ECG data were collected during a baseline and a pain phase.

Poultry production is confronting real challenges, including a lofty projected high demand for animal proteins to feed the future, and the need to adapt to planetary boundaries (global warming) with limited natural resources (land, energy, water). Among the most challenging stressors to poultry production sustainability are heat stress (HS) and water uncertainty, that need extensive fundamental and applied research to identify effective strategies. In that regard, our group has recently developed a high-water-efficient broiler (meat-type) chicken line using water conversion ratio (WCR) as a phenotypic trait and defined the hypothalamic molecular mechanisms controlling drinking water under heat stress conditions.

Hydrophobins are small amphiphilic proteins that confer filamentous fungal hydrophobicity needed for hyphal growth, development, dispersal and adhesion to host and substrata. In insect-pathogenic Beauveria bassiana, nine hydrophobins (class I Hyd1A-F and class II Hyd2A-C) were proven to localize on the cell walls of aerial hyphae and conidia but accumulate in the vacuoles and vesicles of submerged hyphae and blastospores, respectively. Conidial hydrophobicity, adhesion to insect cuticle, virulence via normal cuticle infection and dispersal potential were significantly more reduced by the hyd1A deletion leading to complete ablation of slender rodlets on conidial coat than the hyd1B deletion, which caused a failure to assemble morphologically irregular rodlets into orderly bundles.

Objective: In this retrospective analysis, we explored the clinical characteristics and risk factors of secondary infections in patients with severe heatstroke with the aim to gain epidemiological insights and identify risk factors for secondary infections.
Method: The study included 129 patients with severe heatstroke admitted to the General Hospital of the Southern Theater Command of the PLA between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2021. Patients were divided into an infection group (n = 24) and a non-infection group (n = 105) based on infection occurrence within 48 h of intensive care unit (ICU) admission.
