Single-crystal silicon carbide (SiC) thin-films on silicon (Si) were used for the fabrication and characterization of electrically conductive distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) on 100 mm Si wafers. The DBRs, each composed of 3 alternating layers of SiC and Al(Ga)N grown on Si substrates, show high wafer uniformity with a typical maximum reflectance of 54% in the blue spectrum and a stopband (at 80% maximum reflectance) as large as 100 nm. Furthermore, high vertical electrical conduction is also demonstrated resulting to a density of current exceeding 70 A/cm(2) above 1.5 V. Such SiC/III-N DBRs with high thermal and electrical conductivities could be used as pseudo-substrate to enhance the efficiency of SiC-based and GaN-based optoelectronic devices on large Si wafers.

High spin-orbit torque efficiency induced by engineering spin absorption for fully electric-driven magnetization switching.

Realizing spin-orbit torque (SOT)-driven magnetization switching offers promising opportunities for the advancement of next-generation spintronics. However, the relatively low charge-spin conversion efficiency accompanied by an ultrahigh critical switching current density () remains a significant obstacle to the further development of SOT-based storage elements. Herein, spin absorption engineering at the ferromagnet/nonmagnet interface is firstly proposed to achieve high SOT efficiency in Pt/Co/Ir trilayers.

Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is a serious complication that worsens outcomes and increases mortality in patients with ischemic stroke (IS). HT can occur both spontaneously and after reperfusion therapy. Severe ischemic injury in IS is not sufficient in itself to cause HT; one of the key elements in its development is reperfusion.

Topological Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconducting quantum rings.

Department of Physics "A. Pontremoli", University of Milan, Via Celoria 16, 20133 Milan, Italy.

Abstract: Quantum rings have emerged as a playground for quantum mechanics and topological physics, with promising technological applications. Experimentally realizable quantum rings, albeit at the scale of a few nanometers, are 3D nanostructures. Surprisingly, no theories exist for the topology of the Fermi sea of quantum rings, and a microscopic theory of superconductivity in nanorings is also missing.

Hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal development faces challenges due to the difficulty of stimulating fluid flow and heat-exchange fracture channels within deep, low-porosity, and low-permeability reservoirs. A liquid nitrogen cyclic cold shock method was proposed, using liquid nitrogen as a fracturing fluid. The large temperature difference between the liquid nitrogen and the hot rock induces thermal stress, forming a complex pore-fracture network.

More than 27,000 stomachs from 70 species of fish were collected from the Barents Sea in 2015. Quantitative stomach content expressed relative to the body weight of the predator fish (g g as %) varied by four to five orders of magnitude for six species with the largest sample size (Atlantic cod Gadus morhua, haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus, Greenland halibut Reinhardtius hippoglossoides, long rough dab Hippoglossoides platessoides, polar cod Boreogadus saida, and Atlantic capelin Mallotus villosus). The quantitative stomach contents of individual fish followed a common and strict statistical relationship for predator species or groups of species (by families), and for prey categories across predator species.
