Published: February 2016

Red-tailed phascogale (Phascogale calura) pouch young at birth were relatively underdeveloped in comparison with their eutherian counterparts, and the lymphoid tissues of the immune system were found to be histologically immature. The phascogale thymus rapidly developed in the first few days of pouch life and was quickly populated with lymphocytes. By the end of pouch life, involution of the thymus was underway. The bone marrow started to develop in the early stage of pouch life, although adipocytes and megakaryocytes were not observed until slightly later. The liver was hematopoietic from birth and reached histological maturity toward the end of pouch life. The lymph nodes were difficult to detect macroscopically because of their small size, but were easily identified microscopically later in pouch life, particularly in the mesentery, and these lymph nodes exhibited germinal centers by the end of pouch life. The early spleen was predominately mesenchymal, but exhibited some erythropoiesis. Follicles with well-developed germinal centers were not observed until the latest stage of pouch life. Although intraepithelial lymphocytes were detected in the intestines early in pouch life, the discrete lymphoid aggregates and Peyer's patches characteristic of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) were not detected until later in pouch life. This is the first report of histological development in phascogale pouch young, as well as the first report of the thymus, bone marrow, and lymph nodes in this dasyurid species at any age.

Last decades led to a revolution in the management of ulcerative colitis (UC), due to the development of novel advanced therapies and the identification of increasingly ambitious therapeutic goals. Nevertheless, a subset of patients, refractory to available therapies, still requires proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). Pouchitis, an inflammatory condition of the ileal pouch, is the most common long-term complication of IPAA, affecting almost one-half of patients in the first 10 years after surgery.

Regulating the Thermodynamic Uniformity and Kinetic Diffusion of Zinc Anodes for Deep Cycling of Ah-Level Aqueous Zinc-Metal Batteries.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Power Battery & Systems Research Center, State Key Laboratory of Catalysis, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dalian 116023, China.

Zn metal anodes in mildly acidic electrolytes usually suffer from a series of problems, including parasitic dendrite growth and severe side reactions, significantly limiting the Zn utilization efficiency and cycling life. A deep understanding of the Zn stripping/plating process is essential to obtain high-efficiency and long-life Zn metal anodes. Here, the factors affecting the Zn stripping/plating process are revealed, suggesting that thermodynamic uniformity in bulk structures promotes an orderly Zn stripping process, and a fast kinetic diffusion rate on the Zn surface facilitates uniform Zn deposition.

Unlabelled: The southern brown bandicoot (Isoodon obesulus obesulus) is a small, endangered, Australian, ground-dwelling marsupial. Apart from isolated necropsy reports, there has not been a systematic investigation into the health and causes of death for this species.

Objective: To investigate and document the causes of death and the parasites of free-ranging populations of southern brown bandicoots in southern, central Victoria, Australia.

Salt-in-presalt electrolyte solutions for high-potential non-aqueous sodium metal batteries.

Nat Nanotechnol

January 2025

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA.

Room-temperature non-aqueous sodium metal batteries are viable candidates for cost-effective and safe electrochemical energy storage. However, they show low specific energy and poor cycle life as the use of conventional organic-based non-aqueous electrolyte solutions enables the formation of interphases that cannot prevent degradations at the positive and negative electrodes. Here, to promote the formation of inorganic NaF-rich interphases on both negative and positive electrodes, we propose the salt-in-presalt (SIPS) electrolyte formulation strategy.

Electrolyte engineering has emerged as an effective strategy for stabilizing Zn-metal anodes. However, a single solute or solvent additive is far from sufficient to meet the requirements for electrolyte cycling stability. Here, we report a new-type high-entropy electrolyte composed of equal molar amounts of Zn(OTf)2 and LiOTf, along with equal volumes of H2O, triethyl phosphate, and dimethyl sulfoxide, which enhances electrolyte stability by increasing solvation entropy.
