The chiral title compound, [CeNi6(C3H6NO2)12][Ce(NO3)3(OH)3(H2O)], comprises a complex heterometallic Ni/Ce cation and a homonuclear Ce anion. Both the cation and anion exhibit point group symmetry 3. with the Ce(III) atom situated on the threefold rotation axis. The cation metal core consists of six Ni(II) atoms coordinated in a slightly distorted octa-hedral N2O4 configuration by N and O atoms of 12 deprotonated l-alaninate ligands exhibiting both bridging and chelating modes. This metal-organic coordination motif encapsulates one Ce(III) atom that shows an icosa-hedral coordination by the O-donor atoms of the l-alaninate ligands, with Ce-O distances varying in the range 2.455 (5)-2.675 (3) Å. In the anion, the central Ce(III) ion is bound to three bidentate nitrate ligands, to three hydroxide ligands and to one water mol-ecule, with Ce-O distances in the range 2.6808 (19)-2.741 (2) Å. The H atoms of the coordinating water mol-ecule are disordered over three positions due to its location on a threefold rotation axis. Disorder is also observed in fragments of two l-alaninate ligands, with occupancy ratios of 0.608 (14):0.392 (14) and 0.669 (8):0.331 (8), respectively, for the two sets of sites. In the crystal, the complex cations and anions assemble through O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional network with large voids of approximately 1020 Å(3). The contributions of highly disordered ethanol and water solvent mol-ecules to the diffraction data were removed with the SQUEEZE procedure [Spek (2015 ▸). Acta Cryst. C71, 9-18]. The given chemical formula and other crystal data do not take into account the unknown amount of these solvent mol-ecules.

Potential biological and medical applications of organometallic complexes are hampered by a lack of knowledge of their aqueous solution chemistry. We show that the hydrolytic and aqueous solution chemistry of half-sandwich OsII arene complexes of the type [(eta6-arene)Os(XY)Cl] can be tuned with XY chelating ligands to achieve cancer cell cytoxicity comparable to carboplatin. Complexes containing arene = p-cymene, XY = N,O-chelating ligands glycinate (1), L-alaninate (2), alpha-aminobutyrate (3), beta-alaninate (4), picolinate (5), or 8-hydroxyquinolinate (7) were synthesized.

Adduct formations of Pt(II) complexes containing an aromatic diimine (DA) and an L-amino acid (A) with an aromatic carboxylate (AR) or a mononucleotide (NMP) has been studied by synthetic, structural, spectroscopic, and calorimetric methods. Several adducts between Pt(II) complexes, [Pt(DA)(L-A)] (charges are omitted; DA=2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm); A=L-arginine (L-Arg), L-alaninate (L-Ala), and AR (=indole-3-acetate (IA), gentisate (GA)) or GMP were isolated as crystals and structurally characterized by the X-ray diffraction method. GMP in [Pt(bpm)(Arg)](GMP).

Cu(II)2(acetylsalicylate)4, Cu(II)(anthranilate)2, Cu(II)2[1-(p-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-3-indolylacetate]4, Cu(II)(3,5-diisopropylsalicylate)2, Cu(II)(salicylate)2, Cu(II)2(2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)-phenyl]aminonicotinate)4, Cu(II)(L-alaninate)2, Cu(II)(L-cystinate)2, and Cu(II)(glycinate)2 were generally found to be more effective analgesics than their parent ligands, Cu(II)(chloride)2, and Cu(II)2(acetate)4 in the Writhing Mouse and Adjuvant Arthritic Rat pain models following subcutaneous and oral administration. Comparison of the time course of analgesia for salicylic acid and Cu(II)(salicylate)2 in the adjuvant arthritis pain model revealed that this complex had more sustained activity in addition to being more potent than salicylic acid. Cu(II)2(indomethacin)4 was also found to be as effective as morphine in both pain models.
