By means of neutron scattering and magnetization measurements down to 90 mK, we determine the magnetic ground state of the spin-ice candidate Nd(2)Zr(2)O(7). We show that, despite ferromagnetic interactions, Nd(2)Zr(2)O(7) undergoes a transition around 285 mK towards an all-in-all-out antiferromagnetic state, with a strongly reduced ordered magnetic moment. We establish the (H,T) phase diagram in the three directions of the applied field and reveal a metamagnetic transition around 0.1 T, associated with an unexpected shape of the magnetization curves. We propose that this behavior results from the peculiar nature of the Nd^{3+} doublet, a dipolar-octupolar doublet, different from the standard Kramers doublet studied to date, thus revealing the importance of multipolar correlations in the properties of pyrochlore oxides.

Chiral spin-liquid-like state in pyrochlore iridate thin films.

Nat Commun

Department of Physics and Astronomy, Rutgers University, Piscataway, NJ, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Pyrochlore iridates are notable for studying complex phenomena due to their strong spin-orbit coupling, electronic interactions, and geometrically frustrated lattice structures.
  • In thin films of (111) YIrO with thicknesses ≤30 nm, researchers found a unique quantum disordered state at temperatures as low as 5 K, which was characterized by dispersionless magnetic excitations.
  • Below approximately 125 K, an anomalous Hall effect suggests the existence of chiral spin configurations, attributed to magnetic frustration in the lower-dimensional structure that leads to spin-liquid behavior without long-range order.

Strongly-coupled quantum critical point in an all-in-all-out antiferromagnet.

Nat Commun

July 2018

Division of Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, 91125, USA.

Dimensionality and symmetry play deterministic roles in the laws of Nature. They are important tools to characterize and understand quantum phase transitions, especially in the limit of strong correlations between spin, orbit, charge, and structural degrees of freedom. Here, using newly-developed, high-pressure resonant X-ray magnetic and charge diffraction techniques, we have discovered a quantum critical point in CdOsO as the all-in-all-out antiferromagnetic order is continuously suppressed to zero temperature and, concomitantly, the cubic lattice structure continuously changes from space group Fd-3m to F-43m.

Spin slush in an extended spin ice model.

Nat Commun

July 2016

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada N2L 3G1.

We present a new classical spin liquid on the pyrochlore lattice by extending spin ice with further neighbour interactions. We find that this disorder-free spin model exhibits a form of dynamical heterogeneity with extremely slow relaxation for some spins, while others fluctuate quickly down to zero temperature. We thus call this state spin slush, in analogy to the heterogeneous mixture of solid and liquid water.
