We present a general strategy of reparametrizing semiempirical (SE) methods against ab initio (AI) methods for combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical (QM/MM) simulations of specific chemical reactions in condensed phases. The resulting approach, designated Reaction Path Force Matching (RP-FM), features cycles of sampling configurations along a reaction path on an efficient SE/MM potential energy surface (PES) and adjusting specific reaction parameters (SRPs) in the SE method such that the atomic forces computed at the target AI/MM level are reproduced. Iterative applications of the RP-FM cycle make possible achieving the accuracy of AI/MM simulations without explicitly sampling the computationally expensive AI/MM PES. The bypassed sampling, nevertheless, is implicitly accomplished through the aid of the efficient SE-SRP/MM PES, on which the target-level reaction path is expected to be obtained upon convergence. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the RP-FM procedure for a symmetric proton transfer reaction in the gas phase and in solution. The remarkable agreements between the RP-FM optimized SE-SRP methods and the target AI method on various properties, including energy profiles, potential of mean force free energy profiles, atomic forces, charge populations, and solvation effects, suggest that RP-FM can be used as an efficient and reliable strategy for simulating condensed-phase chemical reactions.

Surface engineering is sought to stabilize nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries, which suffer from severe surface oxygen loss and rapid structure degradation, especially during deep delithiation at high voltages or high temperatures. Here, we propose a well-designed oxygen-constraining strategy to address the crisis of oxygen evolution. By integrating a La, Fe gradient diffusion layer and a LaFeO coating into the Ni-rich layered particles, along with incorporating an antioxidant binder into the electrodes, three progressive lines of defense are constructed: immobilizing the lattice oxygen at the subsurface, blocking the released oxygen at the interface, and capturing the residual singlet oxygen on the external surface.

Many processes can contribute to the attenuation of the frequently detected and toxic herbicides atrazine and metolachlor in surface water, including photodegradation. Multi-element compound-specific isotope analysis has the potential to decipher between these different degradation pathways as Cl is a promising tool for both pathway identification and a sensitive indicator of degradation for both atrazine and metolachlor. In this study, photodegradation experiments of atrazine and metolachlor were conducted under simulated sunlight in buffered solutions (direct photodegradation) and with nitrate (indirect photodegradation by OH radicals) to determine kinetics, transformation products and isotope fractionation for C, N and for the first time Cl.

The photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from oxygen (O2) represents a promising catalytic pathway, the limited efficiency of the oxygen reduction constitutes a primary barrier to enhancing production. In this content, alkali metal potassium (K+) and Br-doped g-C3N4 photocatalysts (K-CN) were successfully constructed by one-pot method. The introduction of K+ is not only beneficial to the transmission of space charge and the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, but also promotes the efficient production of H2O2 by 2e- oxygen reduction reaction.
