Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure. In RA patients, elevated NT-proBNP levels have been reported to be a prognostic marker of left ventricular dysfunction. In this study, we evaluated cardiorespiratory functional capacity and NT-proBNP levels before and during cardiopulmonary exercise test in early RA (ERA) patients. Twenty ERA patients and 10 healthy controls were studied by color Doppler echocardiography to evaluate ventricular systolic and diastolic function. Arterial stiffness and wave reflections were quantified non-invasively using applanation tonometry of the radial artery. Cardiopulmonary treadmill test was performed to measure peak VO and VE/VCO parameters. NT-proBNP plasma levels were measured before and at the exercise peak during cardiopulmonary exercise. The peak oxygen uptake [VO (ml/min/kg)], the ventilatory equivalents for carbon dioxide (EqCO), respiratory exchange ratio and arterial stiffness were similar between patients and controls during cardiopulmonary exercise test. Basal and peak cardiopulmonary exercise NT-proBNP plasma levels were comparable in ERA patients with respect to healthy controls. When we analyzed patients according to disease characteristics and cardiovascular risk factors, ERA patients with high disease activity, BMI > 25 kg/m and ACPA positivity presented significantly higher baseline and exercise peak NT-proBNP levels. Cardiorespiratory function is preserved in patients with recent onset of rheumatoid arthritis. The increased basal and exercise peak NT-proBNP plasma levels in patients with negative disease prognostic factors represent a possible marker to stratify the cardiovascular risk in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis.

We investigated the impact of trimetazidine treatment on left ventricular (LV) functions and cardiac biomarkers in diabetic patients with diastolic dysfunction as an early stage of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Sixty-three patients were randomly assigned to receive either trimetazidine or a placebo for 3 months. At baseline and after 3-months of treatment, measurements of serum levels of glycemic control parameters, lipid profile, tumor necrosis factor alpha, transforming growth factor beta 1, n-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide and assessment of modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea score, echocardiographic indices of LV functions and LV global longitudinal strain (GLS) were performed.

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, National Clinical Research Center for Chinese Medicine Cardiology, Xiyuan Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing, 100091, China.

Objective: To explore the molecular mechanism of Shenmai Injection (SMI) against doxorubicin (DOX) induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis.

Methods: A total of 40 specific pathogen-free (SPF) male Sprague Dawley (SD) male rats were divided into 5 groups based on the random number table, including the control group, the model group, miR-30a agomir group, SMI low-dose (SMI-L) group, and SMI high-dose (SMI-H) group, with 8 rats in each group. Except for the control group, the rats were injected weekly with DOX (2 mg/kg) in the tail vein for 4 weeks to induce myocardial injury, and were given different regimens of continuous intervention for 2 weeks.

Aims: This study aimed to investigate potential biomarkers for predicting incident heart failure (HF) in patients with atrial fibrillation and flutter (AF and AFL), utilizing proteomic data from the UK Biobank Pharma Proteomics Project (UKB-PPP).

Methods: This study analysed data from AF and AFL patients, split into discovery (n = 1050) and replication (n = 305) cohorts. Plasma biomarkers were screened using a multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards model.

Background: COVID-19 is associated with intense systemic inflammation and abnormal coagulation profile leading to an increased incidence of pulmonary embolism (PE). This study investigates whether PE in COVID-19 patients has different clinical, laboratory and radiological characteristics when compared to traditional PE in COVID negative patients.

Methods: We conducted an observational, multicentric, cross-sectional study on consecutive patients diagnosed with PE at admission or during hospital stay from February 21 2019 to February 20 2021.

For effective exercise prescription for patients with cardiovascular disease, it is important to determine the target heart rate at the level of the anaerobic threshold (AT-HR). The AT-HR is mainly determined by cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). The aim of this study is to develop a machine learning (ML) model to predict the AT-HR solely from non-exercise clinical features.
