(p-Chloroanilinium)2CuCl4(C2H14Cl6CuN2) is from an important family of organic-inorganic layered hybrid compounds which can be a possible candidate for multiferroicity. In situ high pressure FTIR, Raman and resistivity measurements on this compound indicate the weakening of Jahn-Teller distortion and the consequent removal of puckering of the CuCl6(4-) octahedra within the layer. These effects trigger insulator to semiconductor phase transition along with a change in the sample colour from yellow to dark red. This article explains the crucial role of the anisotropic volume reduction of the CuCl6(4-) octahedron (caused due to the quenching of Jahn-Teller distortion) in the observed insulator to semiconductor phase transition.

Unconventional reduction reactions in the Nb-O-I system have produced a number of niobium oxyiodides containing the oxygen-centered [NbO] cluster. Crystalline NbOI and two modifications of NbOI were structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The new compounds can be classified as members of the NbOI family, together with the already known NbOI.

A Cu(OH)F hydroxyl-rich copper hydroxyfluoride polymorph, denoted as Cu-2/, was synthesized through coprecipitation or microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis. The structural features were compared to the disordered brucite-like Cu(OH)F polymorph (Cu--31) studied previously. The synthesis conditions were modified by playing with time and temperature in order to understand the allotropic transformation between the two polymorphs.

Enhancing the Reversibility and Kinetics of Heterovalent Ion-Substituted Mn-Based Prussian Blue Analogue Cathodes via Intervalence Charge Transfer.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Mn (d) in manganese-based Prussian blue analogues (MnPBA) exhibits intrinsic orbital degeneracy upon sodiation/desodiation, resulting in severe Jahn-Teller distortion, which usually causes rapid capacity decay and sluggish kinetics. Unfortunately, traditional modification strategies are insufficient for electronic tuning of Mn to mitigate these issues. Herein, Intervalence Charge Transfer (IVCT) of manganese and iron to vanadium ions is unraveled in a series of novel V-substituted MnPBA to enhance electrochemical reaction reversibility and kinetics.

Synthesis and Stabilization of a Benzene Dianion with a Triplet Ground State and Baird Aromaticity.

The triplet benzene dianion is predicted to be aromatic based on Baird's rule. However, it has remained elusive due to the Jahn-Teller distortion. Herein, we report isolation of a benzene dianion with a triplet ground state in an inverse-sandwich europium benzene complex.

The interplay between crystallographic symmetry, structural distortions, and the tolerance factor derived from the isotropic ionic radii of the constituent cations and anions of inorganic perovskites and related materials is a ubiquitous concept in solid-state and materials chemistry. Here we demonstrate a model for the phase transition temperatures associated with these structural distortions in layered perovskites by considering the anisotropy associated with cations, which are susceptible to first-order Jahn-Teller distortions. These symmetry-lowering phase transitions are known to have a significant interplay with superconductivity in the high- layered cuprates, and untangling the chemistry that can effectively control them is of the utmost relevance in the search for similar phenomena in the nickelates, the study of which has been greatly stimulated by recent reports of high-pressure superconductivity.
