Background: Biofouling, the colonization of artificial and natural surfaces by unwanted microorganisms, has an important economic impact on a wide range of industries. Low cost antifouling strategies are typically based on biocides which exhibit a negative environmental impact, affecting surrounding organisms related and not related to biofouling. Considering that the critical processes resulting in biofouling occur in the nanoscale/microscale dimensions, in this work we present a bionanotechnological approach to reduce adhesion of biofilm-producing bacteria Halomonas spp. CAM2 by introducing single layer graphene coatings. The use of this nanomaterial has been poorly explored for antifouling application.
Results: Our study revealed that graphene coatings modify material surface energy and electrostatic interaction between material and bacteria. Such nanoscale surface modification determine an important reduction over resulting bacterial adhesion and reduces the expression levels of genes related to adhesion when bacteria are in contact with graphene-coated material.
Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that graphene coatings reduce considerably adhesion and expression levels of adhesion genes of biofilm-producing bacteria Halomonas spp. CAM2. Hydrophobic-hydrophilic interaction and repulsive electrostatic force dominate the interactions between Halomonas spp. CAM2 and material surface in saline media, impacting the final adhesion process. In addition no bactericide effect of graphene coatings was observed. The effect over biofilm formation is localized right at coated surface, in contrast to other antifouling techniques currently used, such as biocides.

Despite the ubiquitous use of glasses, their simultaneous susceptibility toward scratch-induced defects and atmospheric hydration deteriorates their mechanical and chemical durability. Here, it is demonstrated that the deposition of a few-layer graphene provides unprecedented wear resistance to silica glass in aqueous conditions. To this extent, nanoscale scratch tests are carried out on graphene-glass surfaces via contact-mode atomic force microscopy with chemically inert and reactive tips.

Exposure to high temperatures during indoor and outdoor activities increases the risk of heat-related illness such as cramps, rashes, and heatstroke (HS). Fatal cases of HS are ten times more common than serious cardiac episodes in sporting scenarios, with untreated cases leading to mortality rates as high as 80%. Enhancing thermal comfort can be achieved through heat loss in enclosed spaces and the human body, utilizing heat transfer mechanisms such as radiation, conduction, convection, and evaporation, which do not require initial energy input.

Graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes have demonstrated great potential in water treatment. However, microdefects in the framework of GO membranes induced by the imperfect stacking of GO nanosheets undermine their size-sieving ability and structural stability in aqueous systems. This study proposes a targeted growth approach by growing zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocrystals precisely to patch microdefects as well as to cross-link the porous graphene oxide (PGO) flakes coated on the outer surface of the hollow fiber (HF) alumina substrate (named the hybrid PGO/ZIF-8 membrane).

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) represent a promising technology for energy harvesting and self-powered sensing with a wide range of applications. Despite their potential, challenges such as the need for cost-effective, large-area electrodes and engineering sustainable triboelectric materials remain, especially given the impending restrictions on single-use engineering plastics in Europe. To address these challenges, engineering nano-graphite-coated paper is presented as a sustainable and high-performance alternative for triboelectric layers.

The reliable detection of ammonia at room temperature is crucial for not only maintaining environmental safety but also for reducing the risks of hazardous pollutants. In this study, the electrochemical modification of laser-induced graphene (LIG) with polyaniline (PANI) led to the development of a chemo-resistive nanocomposite (PANI@LIG) for detecting ammonia levels at room temperature. The composite is characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transforms infrared, and Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
