Published: July 2016

Introduction: The fentanyl iontophoretic transdermal system (ITS) is a patient-controlled transdermal system allowing needle-free administration of on-demand doses of Fentanyl of 40 µg over a 10-min period up to 80 doses or over a 24-h period. It is indicated in opioid naïve patients for the treatment of acute postoperative pain in the hospitalized patients for up to 72 h.

Areas Covered: It has been demonstrated to be effective and safe in randomized trials and to provide comparable analgesia versus morphine intravenous (i.v.) patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) with adverse events similar between groups.

Expert Opinion: Fentanyl ITS has shown high patient satisfaction rates, and was described by patients and investigators as easy and convenient to use. These properties make this technology interesting when considering perioperative pain management. In the present health care environment additional data are required to establish the cost-benefit ratio of this technology in optimizing patient's recovery from surgery.

Large-scale infectious diseases have become a significant threat to human health and safety. The successful invention of vaccines is the most powerful means for preventing infectious diseases and has greatly improved global human health. Even during the pandemic of COVID-19, which has affected the world, vaccines have played an irreplaceable role.

Androgenic alopecia (AGA), the most prevalent type of progressive hair loss, currently lacks an effective topical treatment regimen. In this study, we synthesized an ionic liquid (IL) to co-solubilize minoxidil (MXD) and finasteride (FIN) and subsequently formulated them into an in situ thermosensitive ionic liquid/cyclodextrin/poloxamer hydrogel (ICPG), termed M + F@ICPG. M + F@ICPG was developed for the transdermal co-delivery of these two drugs, aiming to provide a multipath therapeutic approach for AGA while avoiding the adverse effects commonly associated with oral FIN and topical MXD tincture.

What Is the Optimal Geometry of Dissolving Microneedle Arrays? A Literature Review.

The application of dissolving microneedle arrays (DMNAs) is an emerging trend in drug and vaccine delivery as an alternative for hypodermic needles or other less convenient drug administration methods. The major benefits include, amongst others, that no trained healthcare personnel is required and that the recipient experiences hardly any pain during administration. However, for a successful drug or vaccine delivery from the DMNA, the microneedles should be inserted intact into the skin.

State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, University of Macau, Macau 999078, China.

Psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory dermatosis, represents a significant clinical challenge due to its complex pathogenesis and the limitations of existing therapeutic strategies. Current psoriasis diagnoses are primarily clinician-dependent, with instrumental diagnostics serving as adjuncts. Ongoing research is progressively deciphering its molecular underpinnings; the future of psoriasis diagnostics may involve genetic and immunological profiling to pinpoint biomarkers, enabling more accurate and timely interventions.
