We experimentally probe the anisotropy of weakly vibrated flowing granular media. Depending on the driving parameters-flow rate and vibration strength-this anisotropy varies significantly. We show how the anisotropy collapses when plotted as a function of the driving stresses, uncovering a direct link between stresses and anisotropy. Moreover, our data suggest that for small anisotropies, the shear stresses vanish. Anisotropy of the fabric of granular media thus plays a crucial role in determining the rheology of granular flows.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on one-photon absorption and circular dichroism in three compounds: fenchone, camphor, and 3-methylcyclopentanone (3MCP).
  • The results indicate that the transitions considered are weakly allowed, leading to significant anisotropies and necessitating the inclusion of non-Condon effects in theoretical models.
  • Experimental data for 3MCP reveals that Herzberg-Teller corrections are essential to align theoretical predictions with observed features, underscoring the role of vibrational factors in electronic circular dichroism dynamics.

Acid catalyzed condensation of -alkyltripyrranes with trialdehydes derived from 1,3-cyclopentadiene or methyl-1,3-cyclopentadiene, followed by oxidation with aqueous ferric chloride solutions, gave 23-alkyl-21-carbaporphyrin-2-carbaldehydes in 22-27% yield together with weakly aromatic oxycarbaporphyrins. The carbaporphyrins reacted with palladium(II) acetate or nickel(II) acetate to give organometallic complexes but in both cases alkyl group migration took place to generate 21-alkyl derivatives. Although this type of reactivity had been observed previously for palladium complexes, this is the first time the phenomenon has been seen in nickel(II) carbaporphyrins.

Reversibly Compressible Cross-Linked Polystyrene Gels, Compatible With Toluene-d and Pyridine-d, for Measurement of Residual Dipolar Couplings and Residual Chemical Shift Anisotropies.

Departamento de Química Fundamental, Centro de Ciências Exatas e da Natureza, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.

A chemically cross-linked version of polystyrene is presented here that allows the preparation of reversibly mechanically compressible gels as NMR weakly aligning media. The gels can be successfully swollen in aromatic solvents such as toluene-d and pyridine-d, as well as in CDCl, and provided accurate measurements of D RDCs and C-RCSAs.

Background: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) significantly impacts brain structure and function, including cognition and behavior. The cingulum bundle and frontal lobe mediate social-, emotional- and cognitive-related functioning that are affected by PAE. However, the neurobehavioural development of the cingulum and intra-frontal tracts has not been examined in people with PAE.

Rotational dynamics of a disk in a thin film of weakly nematic fluid subject to linear friction.

Dynamics at low Reynolds numbers experiences recent revival in the fields of biophysics and active matter. While in bulk isotropic fluids it is exhaustively studied, this is less so in anisotropic fluids and in confined situations. Here, we combine the latter two by studying the rotation of a disk-like inclusion in a uniaxially anisotropic, globally oriented, incompressible two-dimensional fluid film.
