In olfaction, odors typically engage the lungs on the way to the nose to evoke retronasal smell. This is most notable when the lung has a first pass effect during smoking/vaping, but also upon exhaling after sniffing an odor. The lungs act as a sink for odors, which can both reduce the retronasal odor concentration and the odor mixture makeup. Lung retention is a simple measure that quantifies the effectiveness of the sink. Lung retention has been studied in the context of environmental toxicology and is known for many volatile organic compounds. Available data on human lung retention suggests that the lungs may have a large impact on odor perception, and that this may depend heavily on the specifics of active sampling such as sniffing, smoking and vaping. Suggestions are included for transient measures and models of lung retention.

An 80-year-old man with aquaporin-4-antibody-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder presented with a 2-week history of cough and hiccups, followed by progressive bilateral lower limb weakness, a bandlike burning sensation in the upper body, and urinary retention. Magnetic resonance imaging showed area postrema and thoracic central medullary lesions. Thorax computed tomography showed bilateral upper lung lobe consolidations.

High mortality and low response rates in lung cancer patients call for novel therapeutic targets. Data mining of whole-genome genetic dependency screens suggest Cell Division Cycle 40 (CDC40) to be an essential protein for lung cancer cell survival. We characterized CDC40 knockdown effects in multiple lung cancer cell lines, revealing induced cell cycle defects that resulted in strong growth inhibition and activation of apoptosis.

Objectives: Gastroparesis is a complication following lung transplantation. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of gastroparesis in patients with lung transplants undergoing solid phase gastric emptying scintigraphy (GES). Specifically, we investigated which type of lung transplant is more susceptible to gastroparesis and whether timing of GES post-transplantation impacts diagnosis of severe gastroparesis.

The leucine-rich glioma-inactivated protein 1 (LGI1) antibody-related autoimmune encephalitis can occur alone or in the setting of a malignancy and manifest with faciobrachial dystonic seizures (FBDS), cognitive decline, hyponatremia, and neuropsychiatric disorders. The importance of differentiating this entity from acute delirium cannot be overemphasized. This review provides a detailed account of a 71-year-old man with previous diagnosis of lung cancer who presented with subacute onset behavioural changes, urinary retention, and FBDS.

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are advanced biomaterials valued for their strength, lightweight nature, and low thermal expansion, making them suitable for diverse industrial applications. However, their potential inhalation risks necessitate thorough safety evaluations. This study investigates the pulmonary inflammatory effects and retention of CNFs following intratracheal instillation in rats.
